Gum diseases occur when oral care is incorrect or inadequate and due to genetic reasons. There are different treatment methods depending on the size and type of gum diseases. Which of these is preferred is decided according to the degree of the disease.
What is Gingival Recession?
The displacement of the gum from the enamel surface towards the tooth root is called gingival recession. . As a result of this displacement, the root surface is exposed, causing pain and sensitivity in the teeth. The main causes of gingival recession are gum diseases and wrong tooth brushing methods.
Treatment of gingival recession begins with eliminating gingivitis, if any. In cases where necessary, gum diseases can be treated by surgical methods such as removing the gum or connective tissue from the palate, completing the missing gum, shifting the gum or flap operations. Oral hygiene should be taken into consideration after surgical procedures.
Which are the gum diseases?
Gingivitis: Gingivitis is defined as the beginning of gum diseases. Bleeding, redness and increase in size are observed in the gums. Although this situation does not cause any serious discomfort to the patient, it is the beginning of the problem. In addition to bleeding gums, bad breath is one of the most obvious findings of this disease. There is no recession or bone loss in the gums, but tenderness and bleeding occur. The next stage of this untreated disease is periodontitis. In other words, advanced gum and bone loss may occur.
Periodontitis: The most advanced stage of gum diseases is periodontitis. In addition to the gum, damage also occurs to the bone surrounding the tooth. Severe gum bleeding, pus flowing from the gums, enlargement of the gums, redness, swelling and also very intense bad breath occur. Gingival recession is advanced. With bone loss, teeth begin to shake and in later cases, teeth may be lost.
Regular dentist checks, correctly applied daily oral care and routine dental scaling are the main methods that prevent the onset and progression of gum diseases.
