What is done during forehead lift surgery?

Forehead lift surgery is performed as a day surgery and the patient is discharged on the same day. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia. There are two types of forehead lift surgery techniques that are frequently used:

  • Endoscopic forehead lift: Small incisions are made into the hair above the forehead and in the temple area. In some patients, incisions may be made in the natural fold of the upper eyelid. The skin and muscles are separated from where they adhere and moved to their new positions. Afterwards, the eyebrows are moved to their new position and shaped and fixed with stitches.

  • Coronal (crown-shaped) forehead lift: An incision is used at the hairline or within the hair. The incision can be extended from one ear to the other depending on the patient's problem. In some cases, much shorter incisions may be used (depending on the patient's appearance and goals). The forehead is lifted and advanced and excess skin is removed. The eyebrow is fixed to its new position with stitches.

  • Bandings are applied at the end of the forehead lift surgery. It is placed and remains for a few days after surgery. Patients can usually be discharged the same day after surgery.

    What are the scars?

As plastic surgeons, we know the importance of the cosmetic result. We make every effort to optimize scar size and conceal it in the least visible area of the breast. In both methods, the scars are hidden in the hair. In endoscopic surgery, scars occur that correspond to the natural fold on the upper eyelid and heal well.

The formation of this scar varies between individuals and is highly dependent on the genetic predisposition of the person. Scars usually fade gradually over time, but their final size and color are difficult to predict.

How is the recovery period? How much rest is required? When can you resume exercise?

Forehead lift is a surgery that takes 1 to 3 hours and is performed under general anesthesia. The surgical area is covered with a protective dressing. Once the anesthesia wears off, you will be able to go home. For a comfortable post-surgery and good results, it would be appropriate to rest after the procedure. To minimize swelling and bruising in the head and face area, rest with the head up for the first few days and ice can be applied intermittently. There may be bruising under the eyes and it will resolve within a few days. During the first few days after surgery, there may be pain and swelling that responds to medications. Many patients can return to work within 1 to 2 weeks. During the recovery period, strenuous physical activities such as heavy lifting and pulling movements should be avoided for 4 weeks after surgery.

What are the complications of the surgery?

Complications are rare, as in other cosmetic procedures. and may include scarring, asymmetry, bleeding, infection, poor wound healing, swelling and numbness. Complications specific to forehead lift surgery include hair loss in the incision areas, skin loss, raised hairline, weakness and asymmetry in eyebrow movements due to facial nerve damage. Some of these complications may require additional surgical procedures. Your plastic surgeon will give detailed information about the expected results, including possible complications.

When will we see the final results of the surgery?

Surgery results will be seen immediately after the procedure. It will continue to heal over time as the swelling decreases. The incisions usually heal within 2 weeks, and swelling and bruising disappear. Small amounts of unnoticeable swelling may persist for several months after surgery. Final contour and scar results last at least 6 months after surgery.
