Causes
Flexor retinaculum and all structures that thicken the tendons put pressure on the vascular nerve package. This condition is called tarsal tunnel syndrome. The name of the pinched nerve in the medical literature is tibialis posterior nerve. But usually the exact cause is unknown.
Clinical Symptoms or Complaints
- Pain in the inner part of the ankle, on the top of the foot or in the fingers
- Ankle swelling in the inner part
- Sometimes the complaints may be vague or misleading
- Pain increases with activity
- There is pain at night
- There is sensitivity on manual examination.
- There may be a difference in skin temperature and sweating compared to the opposite foot
Diagnosis
Sensitivity is evaluated in the above clinical findings and examination. . EMG should be studied in such nerve compression cases because it evaluates nerve conduction and functions.
Treatment
It is divided into two as surgical and non-surgical methods.
Non-surgical;
- Rest
- Medication
- Local injection
- Orthosis
Surgical Treatment;
- If there is no response to medical treatment
- If there is a space-occupying mass
- If there are positive findings on examination and EMG, surgery should be planned. Flexor retinaculum release (flexor retinaculum realese) is performed surgically.
Tarsal tunnel patients usually do not respond to medical treatment.
