Prof. Dr. Ümit Aykan: “The most effective diagnostic method against asymptomatic glaucoma disease is regular eye examinations”
Glaucoma, popularly known as Eye Pressure and Blackwater Disease, occurs when the nerves that provide vision are damaged due to increased intraocular pressure. It is a disorder that occurs. Prof. stated that glaucoma, which has no noticeable symptoms other than the visual field that gradually narrows over time, can lead to serious vision loss if it progresses. Dr. Ümit Aykan shares information about the importance of early examination and this insidious disease.
Symptoms may not be noticed
It is seen in one in every 100 people and accounts for % of all blindness. Sharing important information about glaucoma, which is responsible for 30% of cases, Prof. Dr. Ümit Aykan: "Glaucoma, which occurs when the nerves responsible for vision are damaged due to intraocular pressure, is one of the most insidious eye diseases because it has no specific symptoms. The most important symptom of this disease, which is very difficult to notice, is the gradual darkening of the outer parts of the field of vision. Patients cannot be aware of the discomfort until this darkening reaches a certain level. In order to diagnose glaucoma in the early stages, it is of great importance for patients to have regular eye examinations. Because it is not possible to detect the disease in any other way,” he says.
Risk groups should be careful
Patients at risk of glaucoma should pay particular attention to this disease. Prof. made statements about the groups that should be trained. Dr. Ümit Aykan said, “Genetic predisposition is among the most important risk factors for glaucoma. This means that if the patient's family has members who have previously suffered from glaucoma, it is very important that these people be more careful and do not neglect routine eye examinations. Glaucoma, which begins to be seen over the age of 40, can be encountered much more frequently in patients over the age of 75. Visual defects and diabetes are among the factors that can trigger glaucoma. At the same time, although it is very rare, it can also occur in children and babies who have problems in eye development. or”.
Diagnosis and treatment methods
Prof. states that there are two types of glaucoma: open-angle and narrow-angle. Dr. Ümit Aykan,“Both types can lead to serious vision loss that can lead to blindness unless early diagnosis and treatment are applied. Unless there is a serious loss in the visual field due to glaucoma, the patient is not aware of these losses and for this reason, regular eye examinations are necessary. In the diagnosis phase, intraocular pressure, corneal thickness, computerized visual field and optic nerve head and fiber measurements are performed. Thanks to these measurements taken during a detailed eye examination, it is possible to make an early diagnosis and prevent serious vision losses that may occur in the future. There are three ways to treat glaucoma. Drug use is the first of these methods. These drugs, which restrict the production of eye fluid or increase and decrease its output, are taken at regular intervals and used throughout life. However, surgical or laser treatment methods are applied to patients whose eye pressure does not decrease with medication. It is possible to achieve successful results with both treatment methods,” he concludes by saying.
