Acute Middle Ear Inflammation

It is an inflammatory disease of the middle ear cavity accompanied by symptoms such as earache, ear discharge, hearing loss and fever. Otitis media is one of the most common diseases of childhood. Approximately 75% of children until the age of 3 experience otitis media at least once. Middle ear infection is usually caused by bacteria. The most common causative microorganisms are S. Pneumonia, H. Influenza and M. Catarrhalis.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF MIDDLE EAR INFECTION?

The most common and important symptom is earache. However, in children under 2 years of age, instead of ear pain, it may manifest itself as restlessness, pulling on the sick ear, constant crying, and loss of appetite. Fever is also a very common finding.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF MIDDLE EAR INFECTION?

At the beginning of the disease, the eardrum is observed to be red during ear examination. In the future, due to the inflammation that accumulates in the middle ear, the eardrum becomes red and bulging outwards. Then the inflammation in the middle ear cavity begins to flow outward. At this stage, a perforation of the eardrum is usually observed. In the hearing test, mild-moderate conductive hearing loss is detected in the patient ear.


 

TREATMENT OF MIDDLE EAR INFECTION

Antibiotic use in middle ear infection. It is a very controversial issue. Considering the complications of middle ear infections, the use of antibiotics seems wise. Although many sources indicate amoxicillin as the first drug of choice, considering the amoxicillin resistance in our country, it is also a correct approach to use amoxicillin-clavulonic acid or cephalosporins as the first choice. Antibiotic treatment should last ten days. Meanwhile, it is necessary to use analgesics to relieve the patient's pain and reduce the fever.

If middle ear infection is not treated, some complications may occur. These are:
