Emotions, thoughts and behaviors are three separate concepts that are quite intertwined in our lives. Many people have difficulty distinguishing their feelings and thoughts from each other, but there are some clues to distinguish between these two concepts, which are the products of our brain. How about first explaining the meaning of emotion and thought in general terms and then talking about these clues?
There is no definition of emotion accepted by everyone. All scientists and artists examine emotion within the framework of their own fields. Carl Gustav Jung's statement, "We cannot illuminate emotionless darkness and we cannot turn exhaustion into action" supports the common thought against emotions. Because being able to experience emotions is one of the most important characteristics that humans have. Can you imagine a life without emotions?
A person encounters many events throughout his life, and evaluates and interprets the events he encounters according to himself. At this point, emotions, which are the mirror of our inner world, come into play. We must not forget that a person never experiences a single emotion. What is felt is always the product of more than one emotion. Sometimes we can even experience very opposite emotions at the same time. These emotions we experience determine our thoughts, and our thoughts determine our behavior. And at the same time, the thought we form makes our existing positive or negative emotions more evident.
If we broadly divide our emotions into negative and positive; Emotions such as excitement, happiness, joy, optimism can be defined as positive emotions, while emotions such as sadness, fear, anger, anger, violence, and jealousy can be defined as negative emotions. So, when we ask ourselves how we feel, the answer we get gives us our feeling. But thoughts are expressed in sentences with a clear beginning and end.
Let's do an exercise; Imagine that your spouse returns home at the same time every evening. One evening, you realize that an hour has passed since your spouse is usually home. You call but your wife's phone is off. Now let's write down our thoughts and feelings.
Our thoughts:
''Something has definitely happened to you.''
''How many times have I told you not to leave me wondering? What is this man up to!''
''K Essen went to the match with her friends again. Now he devotes all his time to his friends!''
Our emotions in order:
Anxiety, fear
Anxiety, anger
Anger, jealousy
It can be like this.
In this example, it is possible to see our feelings and thoughts clearly from different perspectives. Now let's try it another way; For example; You receive a message from a very old and beloved friend of yours, writing birthday wishes after many years. "My dear friend has not forgotten my birthday, even though all that time has passed." Is the sentence above our emotion or our thought? You guessed it right! It is our thought. So, what kind of emotions might we have experienced here? Happiness, Joy...
Now Let's give an example of negative emotions; Imagine that you are going to submit your thesis tomorrow and you do not think your thesis is good enough yet. Our thought: I will submit my thesis tomorrow, but as usual, I failed to do that! Now ask yourself this; Is there really nothing you have achieved so far? When you answer, you will realize that you have overgeneralized.
Now ask yourself, "Why is this important to me?"
Your answer will probably be: "If I cannot submit my thesis well, I will get a low grade." .
Ask yourself again: "Why is this important to me?"
Your answer will probably be: "If I get a low grade, my GPA will drop."
Let's say You have a dream of doing a master's degree in a certain place and when your GPA drops, you move away from this dream.
Now ask again; "Why is this important for me?"
Your answer is probably: "I cannot do a master's degree at ... University." It will happen.
Now ask again; "Why is this important to me?"
Your answer is probably: "I wouldn't be able to realize my dream." It will happen.
Now ask again; "Why is this situation important to me?"
If you no longer have an answer to the question "Why is this situation important to me?", ask yourself this question: "How do I feel about not being able to achieve my dream?" Your answer It could be sadness, despair, unhappiness, grief, etc.
This is how you can analyze your feelings and thoughts. Sometimes& nbsp; You may notice your thinking errors such as distorting information, ignoring the positives in our lives, exaggerating events, overgeneralizing, personalizing, all-or-nothing thinking, and mind reading. At such times, you can gain a realistic perspective by trying to find "alternative thoughts" that support or do not support your thoughts, and as a result, you can behave healthier and make your life more livable.
Stay with love...
