Sleeping With Parents

Even though the child has his own bed, his parents insist on sleeping in his bed, which is a common problem in many homes. The number of children who sleep with their parents or go to their parents' bed at night under various excuses is not small.

Before birth, the baby's room and bed are prepared with care and enthusiasm, and plans are made for the baby to sleep in the bed. Although the ideal thing is for the baby to sleep in the parent's room, in its own crib or bed for a maximum of two months, the baby starts to sleep in the parent's bed for reasons such as separation from the baby, concern that something will happen to the baby, and fatigue from getting out of bed frequently. If there is a separate room for the baby at home and a bed suitable for the baby, the baby should be put to sleep in its own room after the baby turns forty or at the end of two months at most.

The desire to sleep with the parents is more common in the preschool period. Research shows that more than half of preschool children sleep with their parents. It seems that this habit continues during the school period as well.

Since children in the preschool period are not very proficient in expressing their feelings verbally, they show this mostly through their behavior. One of the most important reasons for insisting on sleeping with parents is "fear". The child may not want to sleep in his bed, saying he is afraid, or he may go to his parents' bed at night. There are many reasons behind the child's fear. The most important of these are the fearful dreams. Children start having nightmares starting from the age of 3-4. The child thinks that he will be safe when he sleeps with his parents and insists on this. In homes where parental conflict is intense, children may insist on sleeping with their parents out of concern that they will abandon their home and therefore leave them. Divorce or the loss of one of the parents are also factors that cause children to insist on sleeping with their mother or father. Apart from these, a child who is used to sleeping in his own bed may want to sleep with his parents after the trip when he is separated from them due to travel.

&nbs p; Parents complain about their children sleeping next to them for reasons such as the child saying that he/she is scared, the child uncovering his/her clothes and getting sick at night, the longing of working mothers for not being able to see their children enough, and the remorse of working, but they have difficulty in changing this situation.

Parental attitudes are of great importance in helping the child acquire the habit of sleeping in his own bed. When parents can be determined and consistent on this issue, children can gain the habit of going to bed on their own. In order for the child to stop insisting on sleeping with the parents, the parents, especially the mother, must accept and be able to separate from the child. There are many parents in our society who do not see this situation as a problem, but rather enjoy sleeping with their children. The child who sleeps with his parents becomes a dependent individual and may perceive sleeping apart as his parents not loving him.
