What is Epidural Birth?

Since the mother does not get tired during the birth process, she can actively participate in the birth. Since the mother is awake and pain-free, bonding with the mother and baby becomes easier, and the mother can take care of her baby very soon after birth.

What is essential for epidural birth is that the mother is conscious and prefers to actively participate in the birth process. It should not be forgotten that this is a vaginal birth and some pain and uterine contractions may be felt. Epidural anesthesia is performed after active labor begins, which means that the expectant mother must feel a certain amount of pain until the active phase of labor.

The procedure is performed by an anesthesiologist, with regular uterine contractions and after the cervix is dilated at least 4 cm, the expectant mother is taken to the preparation room where the procedure will be performed. First, a vascular access is established and a serum is applied to the mother, her blood pressure is measured, and the heart sounds of the mother and baby are connected to a monitor. Then the expectant mother rests her chin on her chest, crosses her arms over her shoulders and bends forward as much as possible, arching her back. A good position and remaining still are very important for the procedure to be done quickly. The waist area is cleaned with antiseptic and then the area known as the epidural space is entered with a special needle. During this time, no or very little pain is felt. Under the guidance of this needle, a catheter is placed in the epidural area and the needle is removed. The average processing time is 5-10 minutes. After the procedure is completed, there will be no problem in lying on your back, walking around and moving around.

Following the insertion of the catheter, the medication begins to be administered. After the medication is applied, there will be warming and tingling in the feet, and then numbness will be felt, rising to the navel level, in approximately 15 minutes. The effect begins. The aim here is to ensure that the mother feels contractions but does not feel pain. As the pain worsens as labor progresses and the effect of the medication decreases, medication administration is continued through the existing catheter. With the birth, the need for medication administration ends and the catheter is gently removed.  ;

Since very little medication is used in epidural anesthesia, its negative effects on the mother and baby are very rare. Side effects such as partial prolongation of the birth process, mild dizziness in the mother, temporary drop in blood pressure, nausea, itching, dizziness are observed.
