Breast Asymmetry

BREAST ASYMMETRY

The situation where the breasts are of different size or shape is called breast asymmetry. Although small differences in paired organs such as ears, eyes, breasts, hands and feet are considered natural in the human body, significant size and shape differences are considered asymmetry. Especially when there are different bra sizes on the breast, situations arise that greatly disrupt self-confidence and affect clothing and life comfort. Breast asymmetry may also be present in men and treatment can be planned for this condition.

Differences between the two breasts may be due to development, trauma or previous surgery. It may also occur after breastfeeding. In all cases, it is possible to achieve symmetry with surgeries performed by plastic surgeons.

While asymmetry sometimes only consists of the size of one breast being visibly larger than the other, in most cases the location and shape of the nipple are also different. Sometimes, there is no breast tissue on one side.

Breast asymmetry surgeries are one of the most difficult surgeries in plastic surgery. The surgery is not difficult for the patient, but in cases where correction of each breast is required with very different techniques, it is beneficial to start with an experienced plastic surgeon, as it is necessary to master the techniques to maintain symmetry in the long term.

The result of the surgery is on the face. To be funny, good planning is very important in advance. Before breast asymmetry cases, which I deal with a lot, I always take pictures of my patients in my office and try to plan well beforehand. If necessary, I keep breast prostheses of different shapes and sizes ready during the surgery.

In the vast majority of asymmetry surgeries, surgery on both breasts is required. While sometimes symmetry can be achieved by simply applying breast prostheses of different sizes and heights, in some advanced cases it may be necessary to reduce the breast on one side and place the breast prosthesis on the other. In this case, although the size and shape may appear similar in the early postoperative period, differences will appear in the long term. In order to prevent this, removing a lot of tissue from the large breast and applying a breast prosthesis here is a solution that I foresee after my experiences. It is a combination. However, although we recommend waiting until the age of 18 to correct developmental asymmetries in advanced cases, in cases such as Virginal Hypertrophy or Poland Syndrome, we can move the age of surgery earlier.

1 night hospitalization is sufficient after the surgery. Healing will follow the same course as other breast surgeries performed for aesthetic purposes. In any case, it will be possible to return to light-paced work after 5-6 days.

Correcting breast asymmetry will greatly relieve the person psychologically and contribute to her self-confidence.
