Schizophrenia is one of the 10 diseases that cause the most disability. Its lifetime prevalence is around 1%.
It is a disease characterized by the alienation of the person from the usual-conventional ways of thinking and perception, isolation from the society and shutting himself into his inner world, and a decrease in general functionality. (For example, the person's speech cannot reach its purpose or has flight of ideas, the speech consists of unrelated words, making up new words in the speech). Doubtful thinking (ex: "they are following me"), resentment (ex: "people are looking at me"), grandiosity (e.g. "I have an important assignment"), religious (ex: "I am a prophet"), bizarre (e.g.: "aliens implanted a chip in my brain") may be accompanied by distortions in the content of the thought (delusions), such as thinking that thoughts are being read, manipulated, broadcast.
Symptoms such as auditory (such as hearing voices talking to oneself, making comments, giving orders, swearing) and visual (such as seeing people, creatures, demons) hallucinations may be seen.
Emotion that is dull or incompatible with the thought-speech content, self-laughter, strange face-eye movements, repetitive hand, arm, body movements, imitating the movements of the other person, and standing still may be accompanied by symptoms.
In addition to these symptoms, negative symptoms such as impoverishment in the content of thought, decrease in the amount of speech, decrease in interest in daily activities, social withdrawal, and decrease in self-care are frequently observed, which the relatives of the patients complain about.
Also, patients may have difficulty in understanding a question, in answering the questions asked, may have difficulties in using the information he has learned, and may experience memory and focusing problems. mood-stabilizing drugs can also be used.
