Tic Treatment

Tics are colloquially known as the sensitivity specific to each person's specific movement behaviors. In fact, tics are stereotypical, repetitive and self-made movement behaviors that occur with certain muscles. It often starts in childhood. And it's usually temporary. Even if it takes a few months, there is a high probability of improvement. However, it can sometimes continue until adolescence. We can say that some psychiatric disorders mostly accompany tic disorder; especially like attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Mostly, we encounter motor, that is, movement tics. Because it is more noticeable and can reach dimensions that parents can be quite uncomfortable with. These; blinking, shrugging, neck turning, hand-arm movements. Sometimes we see tics in the form of vocal tics. These are instantaneous sounds from the throat or nose, throat clearing sounds, nasal congestion, sighing, etc. It can be made up of sounds. It happens that we see both motor and vocal tics together.

Although there are psychotherapy methods such as reversing the habit in the solution step, psychopharmacological drug therapy can also be used. However, first of all, our recommendations to families in such cases are as follows: When you start to observe tic in your child, we always say that it is not caused by a negative event, and we should not panic. We know that the condition may be due to an emotional reason in the child, but let's say that it is mostly due to neurodevelopmental reasons.

Try not to let your child notice the tic behavior especially. Don't tick or don't do that etc. Let's not make such suggestions. In fact, don't be distracted every time you see a blinking child do this ticking gesture. Or your child with a blink tic "don't do it, you'll be blind" etc. Let's not say scary things like that.

If these initial recommendations are followed, it may be possible to see tics subside in a few weeks. If it continues, it may be useful to consult a specialist.

Good luck..
