Three golden rules for a practical solution
With the Covid 19 pandemic, the curfews implemented in our country as well as all over the world are a sign of sedentary life. It also caused constipation problems to occur more frequently. General Surgery and Surgical Oncology Specialist Prof.Dr. İlker Sücüllü explained the symptoms and treatment methods of Constipation, which negatively affects our health due to inactivity.
What is constipation and why does it occur?
Constipation is one of the diseases with the most "misconceptions" among the public. There is a situation that involves differences even in its definition. So much so that situations such as staying in the toilet for a long time, straining to defecate, and going to the toilet at long intervals (every 3 days or more) are all called constipation. Naturally, the evaluation and treatment of all these different definitions are different.
The insidious result of a sedentary life is "constipation"
Having a regular daily defecation habit is the result of a healthy cooperation of many systems in our body. is coming out. All diseases that affect metabolism, especially problems with the thyroid gland, can cause disruption of the defecation mechanism and, as a result, constipation. The need to go to the toilet occurs through reflex mechanisms. Constantly postponing this need for social reasons can also cause constipation.
The insidious result of a sedentary life is "constipation"
Now, let's come to the three golden rules we mentioned in the title:
Exercise: It is one of the most important elements for having a healthy gut. A sedentary life may make the existing complaints more obvious in a person with constipation complaints, and may also cause complaints in a person who has no complaints about this issue. For this reason, care should be taken to exercise even at home. If it is possible not to do exercises immediately after meals, it would be more appropriate to plan them 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals.
Water Consumption of at least 2 Lt per Day: do Lack of water causes a significant increase in constipation complaints. Adequate water consumption is the most basic need not only for the intestines but also for the healthy functioning of all systems in the body. Adequate fluid does not mean coffee and carbonated drinks; in fact, excessive consumption of these causes an increase in constipation complaints.
Nutrition with Pulp Foods: Physiologically, water is present in the large intestine. Pulp is formed by absorption. The most basic misperception here is that the closer the food content is to liquid, the easier it is for the person to defecate. However, the system works exactly the opposite. The more fiber reaching the large intestine increases, the better the constipation complaints will be. In fact, laxatives (diarrhea-inducing drugs), which are frequently used uncontrollably by the public to solve constipation, are part of the problem, not the solution, in the long run. Foods rich in fiber should be included in the daily diet instead of foods rich in carbohydrates, which create a feeling of fullness but do not form fiber in the intestine. For this purpose, we can also benefit from food supplements containing factors such as Psyllium, which contribute to the formation of pulp.
During this period when we have to go to hospitals unless necessary, we will have to spend more time at home than usual. it is a fact. Let's not forget that, especially if there is no complaint about this issue, newly emerging constipation does not improve with the practical measures recommended above, it needs to be investigated. The addition of bleeding during defecation to existing complaints requires consulting a physician without delay.
