What is Hoarseness?

All changes in sound quality are generally defined as hoarseness. This includes all of the fine, coarse, forked, tired, never-ending sounds. The voice is formed mainly in the larynx (voice box), by the vocal cords, and the voice is shaped by the tissues (sinuses, conchas) in the larynx, pharynx, mouth and nose. Therefore, conditions affecting the upper respiratory tract can change the sound quality.

The mechanism that creates the sound is actually quite simple. When the vocal cords are opened, we breathe, when they are closed, the air from the lungs creates vibration as it passes between the two vocal cords. This vibration between the vocal cords provides the sound. Just as a simple cold can cause hoarseness, vocal cord cancer can also cause hoarseness. Causes of hoarseness; such as upper respiratory tract infection, acute and chronic pathologies that occur after long-term misuse of the muscles in and adjacent to the voice box, benign or malignant lesions on or adjacent to the vocal cord, tumors pressing on the vocal cord nerve, and vocal cord paralysis, hypothyroidism. It has a wide spectrum ranging from hormonal changes. In this case, hanging in the throat, feeling that there is a foreign substance and the habit of clearing the throat are also common with hoarseness. they should be examined by a specialist. Seeing the voice box and vocal cords is very close to the diagnosis for the specialist, and often diagnostic.
