Milk Teeth

The milk dentition process, which starts with the first tooth erupting in the sixth month following the birth, ends with the placement of all permanent teeth in the mouth. Milk teeth are basically; It plays an active role in chewing, aesthetic appearance and speech. In addition to these, they keep their place until permanent teeth erupt and act as a guide during their eruption. The milk teeth, which have such important roles, should be kept in the mouth until the time for normal fall.

After the first milk tooth appears in the mouth, brushing should also be started by the parent. It is wrong to wait until all the teeth are erupted or the child is old enough to hold a brush. Not brushing properly and eating foods rich in carbohydrates (sugar) together cause tooth decay. Food residues begin to get stuck in the gaps caused by caries in the teeth. This causes pain with biting on the tooth and the child's refusal to eat. Untreated caries progresses over time and pain occurs in the tooth that starts spontaneously and sometimes does not go away even with the use of medication. Caries affects the psychology of children as well as pain and tenderness. Teeth that change color may cause the child not to want to smile.

Deciduous teeth that are not treated on time cause infection, and severe infection leads to loss of teeth before the normal fall out time. The most important feature of milk teeth is that they act as placeholders until permanent teeth erupt. When these teeth are lost prematurely, the overturning of the neighboring teeth into the space created causes problems in the placement of the teeth. Knocked-down teeth can prevent permanent teeth from erupting or cause them to erupt in a different position from where they should be.

Deciduous teeth, which are so important for the development of the child, should be treated when necessary and the teeth should be protected in the mouth. It is wrong to think that these teeth will not fall out after filling or root canal treatment of primary teeth or that the treatment may damage the permanent teeth under the primary teeth. Taking your child to the dentist regularly every 6 months may allow catching possible caries at the initial stage.
