Menopause means not having a menstrual period for 12 months after the last menstrual period. Menopause is the period when women's ovarian functions are completely exhausted. When the eggs run out, the woman reaches the end of her fertility. Menopause occurs between the ages of 45-55, the average age of menopause in Turkey is 47.
Some drug treatments can be used during menopause, depending on the person's complaints. We divide these treatments into two: hormone replacement treatments and non-hormonal treatments. We recommend hormone replacement therapy for a period of time for patients who do not see any risk in using hormones as a result of examination and evaluation, whose mammography examination and breast ultrasound are normal, and who experience severe menopause symptoms.
For some patients, hormone replacement therapy may cause some problems on the breast. They experience fear. For this reason, they do not want to use hormones. Alternative treatment methods can be tried in these women. Menopause symptoms can be reduced to a lesser extent with antidepressants and some other medications that can be purchased by prescription, some supplements that can be sold without a prescription, or other methods such as yoga, meditation and exercises.
Bleeding may increase during the menopause process. The reason for this is that since there is no ovulation, there is no progesterone hormone and as estrogen remains alone, frequent and excessive menstruation begins. If bleeding is prolonged, concern should be taken. Menopausal bleeding occurring more than 12 months after the last menstrual period should be taken into consideration and examination and evaluation are required.
General Complaints in Menopause
Hot flashes, sweating, insomnia and depression symptoms are common complaints. The hormone progesterone is a hormone that causes calmness and quietness in women. This hormone begins to decrease around the age of 35. The progesterone hormone is an indicator of ovulation. As ovulation decreases with age, progesterone hormone also decreases. For this reason, the incidence of depression in women may increase.
Some hormonal changes occur during menopause. An increase is observed in estrone, which causes breast cancer, insulin, which regulates sugar metabolism and also causes fat gain, and cortisol hormones, which cause absent-mindedness, stress and forgetfulness.
Menopause causes an increase in menstrual irregularity. There may be complaints of diarrhea, vaginal dryness, sexual reluctance, hot flushes, hair loss, general fatigue and muscle aches. When these and similar symptoms are experienced, it is necessary to consult a doctor, considering that there may be other diseases behind them.
