Shoulder Impingement Syndrome (Impingement Disease)

What is it?

Shoulder impingement syndrome occurs as a result of the narrowing of the distance between the muscles that provide the rotator movements of the shoulder and the bone structure. It is a condition observed with pain and limitation of movement.

Causes

As a result of long-term shoulder rotation operations in those who work for long periods with arms raised up or make repetitive throwing movements, The distance narrows with edema in the muscle or swelling in the bursa. In some people, it causes narrowing of the distance due to different bone structures or bony protrusions formed at the ends of bones and joints due to calcification.

Clinical

Lifting the arm, Pain is experienced during activities such as moving backwards. Patients complain about not being able to lie on the painful shoulder.

Diagnosis

It is made by physical examination. In addition, if it is necessary to examine the level of compression and accompanying pathologies in the treatment, an MRI examination may be needed.

Treatment

In the early stages, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and exercise are sufficient for treatment. Physical therapy is needed in moderately severe patients. Surgical treatment is performed in advanced stages and in patients who cannot lift their arm upon physical examination, in patients who do not respond to medication and exercise treatment, and in patients with rotator cuff tears and/or bone protrusions rubbing on the cuff on MRI. Surgical treatment can be performed open or arthroscopically closed. In surgery, factors causing congestion are removed. If there is a tendon tear, it is repaired. Physical therapy is applied after the surgery.
