Can Earthquake Strengthen Social Cohesion?

If we want to properly fulfill our duties towards our losses, children and our future, we should put our hat in front of us and learn some lessons from the incident and confront ourselves with an open heart. If we don't do this, the slogan "Don't forget, don't make us forget" after every disaster since the 99 earthquake will remain as a word that has no meaning other than reminding us of the pain and reliving it, without learning anything from what happened. In this respect, it deeply shook the whole of Turkey. Our reaction as a society was a tremendous help-solidarity reflex. This reflex created a very strong confidence in all of us that we, as a nation, will come to each other's aid without hesitation and unconditionally for a moment, even when the state and government mechanisms, which are expected to be the most prepared and the fastest, to intervene in every calamity. Not only that, we felt the pain of the victims, we were sad and wept.

The earthquake showed us that; Whatever divides us, brings us face to face, creates enmity, and causes us to marginalize each other, can suddenly become meaningless. “Is there a way to lead? Although some of us answer this question in the affirmative and some in the negative, if I am not mistaken, I can hear a voice saying “I wish” in most of you. Because we have been so divided and collided for many years, more intensely in the last 15 years, that; We have wasted a social energy that could literally "fly" our country in every field if we could integrate. Is there anyone who doesn't get tired of this?

IT IS POSSIBLE TO MULTIPLE THE COMMON DETAILS

Of course, as in all areas of life, there are contradictions, poles and differences in the social sphere. it is inevitable. A homogeneous society that looks at the world through the same window is almost "dead"; neither creativity nor development is possible in such a society. For example, some may be religious, some atheist, some liberal, some more conservative, and some may be self-contained or ambitious. . Such differences, which constitute the natural texture of every social structure, do not prevent meeting on some common denominators that will form the basis for the development and progress of the society. What is meant by these common denominators is moral values that serve to increase social peace and scientific and rational practices that will contribute to the increase of welfare. For example; The solidarity reflex shown by the society in the face of the losses and destructions experienced in the earthquake, in the next period, against the distorted construction, child abuse, violence against women, the usurpation of human rights and freedoms, the removal of education from the scientific basis, etc. can't it go against it? Of course it can improve, but I realize that I shouldn't be too romantic about it. Because our previous disaster-disaster experiences do not suggest that there is a possibility of social integration in the sense we mean. However, this does not mean that it is impossible to reproduce the common denominators. As a matter of fact, countries such as Chile and Japan, which have succeeded in transforming the disasters they have experienced into a high social awareness and integration, stand before us as good examples. Likewise, the stance of the society against the latest coup attempt after so many military coups we have experienced in our own country reveals that lessons can be learned over a long period of time, albeit relatively. >

Traumatic events can have two opposing effects on the individual and society: either dividing, disintegrating or integrating and maturing. The direction of this depends on a number of factors such as how the society or the individual had previous similar experiences, the state of their moral infrastructure, how they perceived the event, and the level of awareness. At this point, we all have a great responsibility to ensure that the earthquake disaster we are experiencing can push the society towards integration and maturation rather than corruption. Moreover, this task may be more difficult than we think. Because while the pain of the earthquake was still fresh, trying to turn the destruction into an opportunity; So many people who loot, raise rents to astronomical figures, black market for needed goods and services, lie on their ears rather than sincerely self-criticize in the face of this tragedy. In the middle, it can be seen that the tendency to come out of this trauma by degenerating is not insignificant. Moreover, more than all of this, it is necessary to deal with a very pathological social memory dating back to many years in which moral collapse has become a routine in society. Under these conditions, in order to channel the process in the opposite direction, a handful of intellectuals, artists, scientists, non-governmental organizations, the media, political formations that can really see the importance of this, in short; Everyone who has reason, understanding and conscience needs to be in a dynamic effort over a period of time that will ensure results. If necessary, the establishment of new NGOs, virtual or real platforms that will accelerate and advance this social integration/growth we mentioned should be considered. If we want to do it properly, we should put our hat on and take some lessons from the event, confront ourselves with an open heart, and find a very meaningful expression in our culture, “One misfortune is better than a thousand advices.” We must take action by accepting his word as a motto. However, if we do this, we can find the strength to start the day with a smile when we look in the mirror.
