SKIN HEALTH IN ADOLESCENCE

With the hormonal change experienced during adolescence, some changes begin in the skin. The most common problem we observe among these is acne. Acne is basically caused by the excessive oil secretion of the sebaceous glands in the skin. However, there are some reasons that increase this oil secretion. Acne can be caused by stress, environmental factors (heat, humidity, sun), wrong cosmetic use, nutrition and diet habits, some medications (cortisone, vitamin B12, lithium, etc.), diseases caused by hormonal imbalance (for example, polycystic ovaries, etc.). Acne first starts as a plug, which we call a blackhead, and can become inflamed in the advanced stages and turn into deep, hard masses with pus. Acne left untreated can cause sunken scars on the skin in the future and create a disturbing appearance. This is especially true since adolescence is a psychologically distressing period. This situation can cause problems in the person's school and private relationships.
The most important thing to pay attention to during this period is the cleanliness of the skin. We need to wash it twice a day, without irritating the skin, without overdrying it, and with a suitable non-soap based cleanser. Wear foundation with too much coverage on the skin. We should not use cosmetics such as powder. Since it has been shown that the rubbing process, which we call friction, disrupts the functions of the sebaceous glands and increases acne, we should stay away from procedures such as scrubbing and fiber and granular peelings. Chemical peelings performed under the supervision of a doctor are preferred during this period because they balance the oiliness on the skin and reduce the appearance of acne. Our moisturizing creams are water-based. It should be.
In nutrition, they should avoid especially fatty and high glycemic index foods (carbohydrate-rich diet), and excessive consumption of milk and dairy products (especially diet light milk). We should eat more vegetables, fruits and meat and fish.
Another problem in adolescence is stretch marks that occur due to rapid height growth or weight gain and the skin not being able to adapt to this. At first, they are red and purple in color and turn white over time. The hips, back, arms and legs are the most common areas. To prevent its occurrence, weight control is ensured. It is necessary to use some special and preventive creams. Cellulite is also a problem that begins to occur in this period. It is a wavy appearance, which we call the orange peel appearance, on the skin, which is mostly seen in women. Drink plenty of water to prevent this condition, which is difficult to treat in advanced stages, or to prevent it from increasing. We should drink alcohol, not gain weight, do exercise such as walking, stay away from tight clothing, have a carbohydrate-restricted diet and not consume excessive coffee.
