Every person has experienced at least one event that had a negative impact on them throughout their lives. These experiences can be quite painful at times. However, this pain must end after a certain period of time after the experience is over, in other words, after the event(s) that upset us are over. If our pain still continues, we need to give it some more time and if it does not go away, we need to investigate the reasons. The reason for this seemingly endless pain is that the connections we make with the event we experience affect our minds. In other words, if a situation that would not upset or hurt anyone else is so challenging for you, it can be said that it is due to a deeper problem that needs to be solved.
Since our childhood, our brain records a lot of information and we learn many things. Some of the meanings we give to the things we learn and experience while growing up are true, but not all the experiences we have in our childhood are true. For example, believing ourselves worthless when our friends make fun of us or thinking that we are responsible for our parents' fights. In fact, these thoughts are our misperceptions as children. Because for a certain period of time, children think that everything is about them, this is a periodic perception. We assign meaning to everything we experience, but the meanings we give as children are always about ourselves. This happened because I was naughty, they make fun of me because I'm clumsy, my friend said no to me, I'm unpopular, etc. Due to these perceptual differences, not every experience is recorded accurately in the mind. The experiences we have may have effects beyond our control that we become more aware of as we get older. Negative life experiences cause us to react negatively, and this happens against our will. For example, a girl who witnessed her father cheating on her mother when she was little, overreacts when she sees her boyfriend talking to a woman, or a soldier who fought at the front reacts with high emotion. An example would be extreme anxiety reactions when hearing sounds. Fears whose origins are thought to be unknown may have a simple underlying reason, such as being afraid of airplanes, dogs or cats, or heights.
I encounter them very often during my sessions. A situation I come across is that people who have problems and apply for therapy say, "I have a good family and I don't understand why I experience such things." While we can all make sense of the distress experienced by children who had a difficult childhood, were abused, or were not supported by their families, we cannot make sense of the distress experienced by people who have not encountered such events, and in fact, in the words of my clients, we often describe it as spoiledness. However, this is often not the case. It's quite possible for us to feel this way even if we have supportive parents. Because our wishes and needs may not always be understood (which is very normal), sometimes receiving excessive support can negatively affect our perception of ourselves, while sometimes our brain can completely suppress the painful experience we had as a child and we may not be able to remember it.
EMDR therapy eliminates negative emotions, sensations and beliefs. It targets these unprocessed memories that contain By activating the brain's information processing system, it reduces the impact of old memories and eliminates them completely. It transforms useless and negative thoughts into useful and functional thoughts. However, unprocessed memories do not have to be only in childhood. For example, serious reasons such as natural disasters such as earthquakes and floods, accidents with great losses, war, harassment, emotional or physical mobbing at work, humiliation in relationships, rejection, and exposure to physical violence are situations that need to be resolved directly with therapy.
Various psychological disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, panic attack, OCD, anxiety problems, somatization, relationship problems, the pain of separation that cannot be overcome, etc. Problems such as these arise from the unprocessed memories we mentioned above. Negative emotions and beliefs, which are the source of chronic problems, can often be eliminated by working on these distressing unprocessed memories. If there is a distressing symptom (this can sometimes manifest itself physically, such as pain, stomach problems, etc.), there is usually an experience that creates it, whether we remember it or not. Often, the cause of some malfunctions/diseases in your body is psychological.
Then you have some problems with your perspective on life. If you are anxious, depressed, aggressive, shy, etc., or if you have some problems in your relationships with people or if you have had a challenging life experience, we can talk about the existence of unprocessed memories. It is important to remember that processing these memories is the basis of a peaceful life. If you want to get rid of the negative consequences that hold you back in your life in a short time, you should try this therapy method.
