Surgical treatment of diabetes is a subject that has attracted a lot of curiosity lately. It is met with astonishment in society and even in the medical community, how diabetes can be cured with surgery.
First of all, it is not a treatment method applied to all diabetic patients. Diabetes disease is divided into 2 groups; type-1 and type-2.
The main problem in type-1 diabetes is that the pancreas gland does not produce insulin hormone, and unfortunately, today, the missing insulin for type-1 diabetes is administered externally and experimental treatment methods such as pancreas transplantation and islet cell transplantation are used. There is no other known treatment method.
However, the situation is different in type-2 diabetes. 90% of diabetics in society have type-2 diabetes. The problem in type-2 diabetes is insulin resistance, not insulin deficiency. In other words, our body cannot use the insulin produced efficiently. These patients are in the diabetes group that can be corrected with surgical treatment. So how?
To summarize without going into technical details; With some changes made in the small intestines, diabetes is eliminated by reducing the hormone levels that prevent insulin resistance and efficient use of insulin, and by adjusting the secretion times of some hormones that enable us to use insulin better. In other words, what is actually done is traffic control at the intersection.
Can these surgeries be performed on all type-2 diabetic patients? Unfortunately no. Which patient is suitable for surgery and who will benefit from surgery is determined after a detailed pre-operative evaluation process. In patients who are candidates and suitable for surgery, it is possible to completely recover from diabetes and get rid of all diabetes medications, including insulin, after surgical treatment.
I wish you all healthy days.
