Our eyes are our body's window to the world... So, how much do we know about the health of our most valuable organ? What should we do to protect our eyes from sunlight? What diseases does spending hours in front of the computer invite? What should we do when we have itching in our eyes?
Eyes are the mirror of both the heart and the body. The most important detail noticed first on the face are the eyes. Eyes reveal our emotions and mood. Good eye care also makes our eyes shine with self-confidence.
The working environment is one of the most important threats to eye health!
Today, people with a busy business life spend approximately 7-8 hours in front of the computer a day. Assoc. Prof. stated that long periods of time spent in front of the computer can cause inflammation of the eyelashes, allergies and dryness. Dr. Yıldırım Beyazıt Şakalar said, “When we are in front of the computer, we forget to blink our eyes due to intense concentration. However, the surface under the eyelid washes the corneal surface of the eye with each blink. In addition, we should sit with our posture upright so that instead of facing the monitor directly, we can look at the monitor from above. The working environment should be well ventilated and the eyes should be rested by moving away from the screen at regular intervals. Additionally, soft yellow lighting should be used in your work environment.” said.
Be careful with sun rays!
Assoc. Prof. stated that excessive exposure to sun rays can cause great damage to the eyes as well as the skin. Dr. Yıldırım Beyazıt Şakalar said, “As the time we spend under the sun increases, darkening of our lenses, cataracts and sensitivity to vision may occur. For this reason, sunglasses should be used during periods when the sun's rays are direct, especially people with colored eyes are more sensitive to sunlight, so they should be more careful when using sunglasses to avoid redness in their eyes.” he said.
Avoid rubbing and scratching the eyes as much as possible!
Mechanical trauma in the form of excessive rubbing and scratching of our eyes causes keratoconus disease in people who are genetically predisposed. Assoc. Prof. said that it could cause pain. Dr. Yıldırım Beyazıt Şakalar said, “In case of a sudden blow to your eye or an object getting into your eye, your eyes should not be rubbed. If present, wash with saline solution or if not with plenty of water, and consult an ophthalmologist. It should not be forgotten that watery eyes, itching, pain, difficulty reading, text mixing, eye and headache, reading with the head tilted, squinting and focusing problems are symptoms of eye diseases.” he said.
