Speech Disorders and Speech Delay

Speech is the expression of verbal language through sounds. Speech is extremely important in interpersonal communication.

Children must have a speaking level directly proportional to their age, be able to use speech for communication purposes, be understood by people other than their parents, and speak with a vocabulary and sentence structure appropriate to their age. Speaking fluently, without getting stuck, are the basic characteristics that show whether the child is at the level of maturity expected for his/her age in terms of development.

Delay or impairment in speech may be observed due to many factors. The main ones are neurological, genetic or motor problems, hearing disability, mental retardation, having autism-like communication problems, being in emotional stress, socio-economic limitation, the parent not giving the child speech-supporting stimuli or inadequate care, deprivation of the parent, low education level of the family. These can be listed as having a bilingual mother tongue at home, having individuals with speech delay in the family.
What we call an articulation disorder is a disorder in the pronunciation of speech sounds (using a t sound instead of a k sound: töpet instead of a dog), or what we call a phonological disorder (placement of sounds in words). changing or swallowing), may make it difficult for the child to express himself, and may cause him to feel strange and react in his social environment. In the preschool period, many of the sounds begin to be pronounced correctly with age, but still pronouncing the sounds incorrectly after the age of 5-6 may cause faulty learning in your child as he or she begins to learn to read and write, and may affect school success.

Speech is directly proportional to age. Failure to do so may cause serious communication problems in the future. Absence or late development of speech may be a symptom of one of the many problems listed above. Identifying problems at an early age and finding solutions will help your child grow in harmony with his/her peers and social environment and become a successful, healthy and happy individual.
