Day Out (Surmaturation)

Pregnancies lasting longer than 42 weeks are given names such as lapse of time, surmaturity, postterm, past term, postmaturity, day's passing, day's completion. It is seen in approximately 3% of all pregnancies. This condition is more common in very young and older mothers. The average pregnancy period in humans is 280 days, that is, 40 weeks, starting from the first day of the last menstrual period.

The reason is not clearly known.

When diagnosing menstrual periods, updating old ultrasound measurements as well as the last menstrual date stated by the mother ( especially ultrasounds performed in the first 4 months of pregnancy) are very important.

Risks brought by pregnancy:

Fetal distress as a result of inadequate transport of oxygen and nutrients due to circulatory deterioration in the placenta. can develop. For this reason, especially in pregnancies that are overdue, baby movements should be carefully monitored as a health indicator. Increased oxygen deficiency causes the fetus to produce the first stool, called meconium. This first stool that the baby makes into the amniotic fluid before birth can escape into the baby's lungs during birth or even in the womb. This situation, called meconium aspiration, can cause serious problems in the baby. Additionally, some of the babies born over time may be large babies. The baby's fluid flow may decrease (oligohydramnios), which increases some risks such as cord compression.

Dysmaturity syndrome:

When daybreak begins, a condition called Dysmaturity syndrome develops. can start. Dysmaturity syndrome is seen in approximately one-third of premature babies. It is generally characterized by wrinkled, dry and cracked skin, long nails, long hair, muscle weakness called hypotonia, yellow - green or brown skin stained with meconium, umbilical cord and membranes as a result of the loss of subcutaneous fat stores.

Treatment:

The pregnancy should be monitored closely until 42 weeks (in some hospitals, this limit may be taken as 41 weeks). The mother monitors whether there is a decrease in baby movements, and NST is performed every 2-3 days starting from 40 weeks. Ultrasound and other tests may be added if necessary. If no problems are encountered, birth is induced at 41 or 42 weeks during follow-up. obs for normal birth If there is no traumatic obstacle, labor is attempted to be initiated with artificial pain. If there is an obstacle to normal birth (large baby, unsuitability of the mother's pelvis, etc.), then the pregnancy is terminated such as cesarean section.
