In recent years, we have heard about harassment and rape so frequently that it has almost begun to feel like an ordinary life event for us. Although this news we heard, especially for children, was met with great reaction by a group of people, it was met with no reaction by a significant part of the society. Many articles have been written and many discussions have been held about the psychology of the victims who have been exposed to these painful events for so long, but in order to resolve this situation, the psychology of the people who committed the action is as important as the psychology of the victims. Because no matter how many precautions are taken, no matter how high the penalties are given, the existence of a human psychology that makes this happen should not be forgotten. And unless this psychology is clarified and understood, we will not be able to talk about a complete solution.
Now, just think for a short while, what kind of human psychology can reach the level of harming another person? What kind of psychology can reach a level that leads to abuse of another person, or even worse, of a child?
Almost all societies in the world continue to exist in an order based on male domination. This order gives men superiority, even though they talk about the concept of equality. As a result of this ongoing situation, when the male gender begins to use the concept of power in an uncontrolled way, it may come to a point where it will not accept the answer 'No'. The legendary meanings placed on the penis lead it to be believed that the man's greatest power comes from here. When a man thinks that his most powerful weapon, perhaps even his only weapon, is his own penis, he will not hesitate to use it. Now imagine that this psychology takes hold uncontrollably. In this case, the man; He will not hesitate to use his weapon to realize his wishes, to rebel, to fight against society, to react to the rules, to take revenge, to vent his hatred, to satisfy his libido, to show that he is strong. It is unlikely that this urge for rebellion and revenge has anything to do with a victim who is, of course, a child. This impulse is often attributed to his own family, social environment, upbringing, and accumulation of compassion and love. It is a situation that develops gradually. It is not possible for an individual who grew up lacking feelings of love, compassion and mercy to approach other individuals with empathy. It would not be right to expect an individual who is constantly exposed to violence to develop the concept of self-love. When we look at it from this perspective, we cannot evaluate people who commit crimes independently of the factors that increase their tendency to crime. If we are going to fight this crime, we must also fight the situations that create the crime. Just raising children to protect themselves will not be enough. We must also fight against all kinds of negativities that encourage society to commit crime. The person who commits the crime is as guilty as the criminal who is responsible for the inadequate and incomplete social development that gives him the right to commit the crime. If there is an invention that is more important than the treatment of a disease after it occurs, it is an invention that prevents the disease from appearing completely.
So far, we have talked about male criminal psychology, but although the majority of abuse criminals are men, there are also criminals of female gender. . Even though women do not have the penile power as men, they can still commit this type of crime. However, the number of female criminals is much less than that of men. So how does this psychological system work in women? Again, we see a system similar to that of men. If a victim in the role of a victim comes to a time when he/she has power and uses this power uncontrollably, the concept of crime will emerge. For example; A woman who has been subjected to sexual abuse, a woman who grew up in a violent environment, a woman who has not had a say throughout her life, or a woman who has been constantly oppressed can use her power in favor of abuse when she finds the opportunity. While women can commit crimes whenever they have the opportunity, men have been given this opportunity throughout their lives.
A child is born innocent, but is immediately ready to put aside his innocence in order to realize his wishes. In order to take a toy from another person, he can easily harm that person and have no regrets about it. So, somewhere as we grow up, that compassion and regret must be instilled in us. Otherwise, we may attempt actions that we do not consider the consequences of and will never regret. So what I will say is that we are born as evil beings, we learn goodness. We learn and behave well in order to receive goodness.
The situations that encourage a criminal to commit a crime must be understood as well as a criminal. As these conditions are improved, every person is ready to become well. What we need to do is to fight the factors that cause crime, instead of fighting the people who commit crimes, in order to create a better society. A better society will exist with a better social psychology. The future of our existence depends on it.
