Like sleeve gasrectomy, this procedure begins by removing most of the stomach. The surgeon then closes the middle part of the intestine and connects the last part to the duodenum. This is called duodenum switch.
The divided part of the intestine is not removed from the body. It attaches to the end of the intestine, allowing bile and pancreatitis gastric juices to flow into this part of the intestine. This is called 'biliopancreatic diversion'. After such changes, many foods do not enter the small intestines and thus fewer calories and nutrients are digested. This leads to weight loss along with a smaller stomach.
