Is Our Psychology Ready to Return to Normal?

We are going through a pandemic period that affects not only our country but also the world. During this period when we were struggling with the coronavirus, we all stayed in our homes for a long time as possible and experienced the limitations and concerns of this period. Nowadays, as we leave behind a period of approximately three months, we have started to return to our normal life again. Of course, some differences await us in the process of returning to normal life compared to the past. Behaviors such as paying attention to social distance, using masks, and complying with hygiene rules are being added to our normal lives as new normals.

'What does the new normal mean?', 'How long will it last?', 'Will we be able to return to our old normal?' Questions like ' occupy all of our minds. We can define the new normal in its simplest form as changes that include rules that will allow us to get through the pandemic process with the least damage, but will also allow us to live our normal lives and continue our social life. Although how long the virus will last is still a matter of debate by experts, we can predict that it will last until its treatment is found. Until then, if we live the new normal in the healthiest way and take care to fulfill our responsibilities for ourselves, our loved ones and our society, we should know that one day we can return to our old normal. Of course, there will be points that this process leaves us with and adds to our routine, and every day brings changes to us and our lives, even if we do not realize it. When we look at it from this point of view, there will definitely be innovations left to us by this process.

So, are we psychologically ready for this process? How does the normalization process, the definition of 'new normal' make us feel?

On the one hand, it was good for us to be able to leave our homes after a period of approximately three months, to be able to get together with our families, friends and loved ones, even if it is by observing social distance. . However, there is a point here; even though we are tired of staying in our homes and want to reunite with our loved ones, we have to return to our old routines with the rules of the new normal, be limited, there is an ongoing pandemic process and when will it end? Not knowing the truth is still a situation that can cause anxiety for many of us. At this point, we should not forget that it is frequently stated by experts that there is nothing that would cause us to hesitate to return to our normal life as long as we follow the rules of the new normal.

At this point, we have responsibilities to take, and as long as we take these responsibilities, we can protect our own health, the health of our loved ones and the health of society. Maybe these new rules may bore us as we return to our routine, may make us feel that we cannot go back to the old days completely, may increase our level of worry and anxiety, but there is a point we should not forget at this point that one day a cure for this disease will be found, even if the process tires us, one day it will be over and until then we will do our best. The thing is to follow the rules.

What we need to think about before struggling with anxieties and burdening ourselves with our worries is that even if we cannot find a solution right now, we know the preventive points; The protection of the rules we follow is our most important point here, and knowing that we can protect ourselves and the public's health if we comply should be a comforting point for us.

However, in this process, we see that there are people who comply with the rules of the new normal, as well as people who bend them or even do not comply. These people are generally people who can say 'Nothing will happen to me', 'No matter what' or 'This virus thing is being exaggerated, a lot of people are dying for other reasons' and in the process, they put both the authorities and those who are trying to return to their normal lives by following the rules in a difficult situation. They sting. The efforts of the relevant authorities are certainly important in this process, but our most important point right now is that each individual has self-control in complying with the rules. As a society, we have always had responsibilities towards each other, but in this process, these responsibilities have increased even more. If the rules are not followed, we not only endanger our own health. In other words, every rule we do not follow also has a social impact. Unfortunately, these people can have a negative impact both on the spread of the virus and on people's anxiety as they adapt to their social lives again.

People who do not follow the rules have influenced the world. and they need to be more careful about taking into account a virus that still looks dangerous with rising and death rates. Yes, we are going through a difficult and uncertain process. We were bored and psychologically affected during the months we stayed at home. We now want to switch to our old order without the rules of the new normal, but we need to be a little more patient while the process is still ongoing. These people need to be more controlled in terms of complying with the rules, realizing that they are putting themselves and public health at risk by ignoring the virus and its effects. In order to avoid a period of attack that will cause us to stay at home again, we need to socially comply with the rules of the new normal. It is now the human duty of every individual to act knowing that if we do not comply with the rules, we will not only be affected by ourselves, but also by spreading the virus and affecting people, both familiar and unknown, around us.

The difficulty of the process we are going through, the fact that we have been staying at home for a long time, and the fact that we are walking on a road with an unknown end, can of course be worrying and psychologically tiring, but it is important to relax in terms of precautions, to think that nothing will happen or to think that it is exaggerated. Thinking is not right for our own health or public health in this process. At this point, it is our prerequisite for healthier days that we proceed by paying more attention to the situation and continue without bending or ignoring the rules.

We are living in times when we need to get used to adapting to our normal life with the rules of the new normal, not forgetting that staying at home all the time wears us out psychologically in the long run. Even though we are all connected to each other in this process, as long as we take individual precautions, we need to continue our journey by warning people when there are people around us who do not comply with the rules, and if our warnings are not effective, by moving away from the environment as much as possible or by making complaints to the necessary authorities. Our first priority is for us to comply with the rules individually. As long as we follow the rules, it will be easier for us to go through the process in a healthy way, both physically and spiritually.
