Op.Dr. Gökmen İyigün answered questions about early menopause.
. Why should we not be afraid of menopause but pay attention to early menopause?
Menopause is encountered by 99 percent of all women at the age of 50 (44-56) on average, and they can prepare themselves emotionally, socially and physically for these natural processes. It is a process for which we, as physicians, are well prepared for the medical, social and psychological support required after menopause.
However, early menopause often catches people unprepared. Women and even young women encounter them while they are maturing their lives, completing their education, and trying to resolve some of their daily concerns. It can often take away the chance of having a child suddenly and most dreamed of.
Thus, today, in modern city and metropolitan life, with extended periods of education, finding a job, and making career plans, young women, especially in societies with vertical social mobility such as our country, get married. They delay the age of marriage and childbearing in order to avoid it before completing their careers and to seek a spouse with social, economic and cultural development parallel to their own development.
It is precisely in this search for perfection that early menopause occurs, which can be seen in 1 percent of women. This group mostly affects women. Therefore, suspicion, diagnosis and early counseling of this group of patients are vital.
