PAINFUL SEXUAL INTERCTION

Although pain experienced during sexual intercourse is common, it is one of the sexual problems that is often neglected. 20% of women between the ages of 18-55 experience pain during sexual intercourse. The frequency of painful sexual intercourse is 14% in women between the ages of 20-70. It is divided into two as superficial pain and deep pain.

Superficial pain:

Women can feel sexual pain in the entrance area of ​​the vagina called introitus. It is known that 80% of women who experience sexual pain at the time of penetration have vulvodynia. Pain occurs in the vagina during intercourse due to vaginal infections, vaginal atrophy occurring during menopause, congenital vaginal anomalies, and episiotomy performed during birth. Urinary tract complaints such as frequent urination, burning sensation, incontinence, and urinary incontinence are present in almost half of the women suffering from sexual pain. It is the pain felt in the area. 40% of women who experience deep pain during intercourse have endometriosis (chronic disease with chocolate cysts). In addition, pelvic infections, abscesses, ovarian cysts, uterine tumors, intra-abdominal adhesions due to previous infections or surgeries are among the causes of deep sexual pain. Sometimes both superficial and deep pain can occur together. Irritable Bowel Syndrome and constipation are present in approximately half of women with sexual pain.
