In recent years, many families have their newborn babies' umbilical cord blood stored in cord blood banks through the hospital where they gave birth. In this regard, it is a misleading approach for some cord blood banks and hospitals to promote cord blood as a panacea.
What is cord blood?
Immediately after birth, the baby's umbilical cord is cut and the blood taken from the cord, which mediates the blood circulation between the baby and its mother, is a source of stem cells. However, stem cells taken from someone else are beneficial for every child. Because treatment of hereditary diseases is not possible with one's own cells. There is a hereditary basis in many cancer diseases, including leukemia. So, in this case, there may also be a problem with the stem cells.
Today, the majority of childhood leukemias can be completely treated with chemotherapy. In adverse cases, the first application is not cord blood, but bone marrow transplantation from a sibling or non-family donor whose tissue is suitable.
In addition, since the amount of cord blood is not very sufficient, positive results cannot be obtained in overweight individuals and this blood can be used for a maximum of 10 minutes. One of the big problems is that it can be stored for 15 years. As a result, according to our current knowledge, cord blood is more useful for others than for ourselves. In this respect, its use can be considered.
However, in this case, since the cord blood of the donor will be examined in detail, it will be a problem to reveal the diseases of this person in advance.
