Attention Parents!

Don't dismiss it as diarrhea.

We are in the middle of summer. Did you know that diarrhea is at the top of the list of most common infectious diseases in babies and children in these months? Do you know that at least 1 billion children under the age of 5 in the world suffer from diarrhea every year, and 80% of these, that is, 4 billion, are children and infants under the age of 2? Do you know that pneumonia ranks first and diarrhea ranks second in the list of infectious diseases that cause the most deaths in young children in the world and in our country? Do you know that approximately 2 million children die every year in the world due to diarrhea?

Babies who are younger than 6 months and breastfed poop 5 to 6 times a day, with golden yellow, slightly shaped and slightly scented poop. Older children poop 2 to 4 times a day, with yellow or brown poop that has a more distinctive smell and is more consistent and shaped. Depending on the food eaten, there may be daily changes in the color and odor of the stool. If there is a significant increase in the number of daily stools of a baby or child compared to previous days, if the stool becomes very watery and gassy, if the smell of the stool becomes worse, if there is a significant change in the color of the stool and if there is mucus or blood in the stool, diarrhea has started. In addition to diarrhea, the patient may experience vomiting, abdominal pain, high fever, decreased appetite, extreme weakness, and a tendency to sleep.

Summer diarrhea should definitely not be taken lightly. The biggest reason why diarrhea is dangerous is that the body's water and salts such as sodium and potassium are removed from the body through vomiting and watery stools. If timely and effective treatment is not applied, the condition of children may rapidly deteriorate due to salt and water loss. As a result, the patient may be hospitalized, go into shock, or even die.
