What is EMDR and how is it applied?

EMDR is a therapy method named with the first letters of the words "Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing" and has been translated into Turkish as "Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing".

EMDR therapy is due to trauma, intense fear and anxiety. It is a method that allows us to get over and relax by making sense of the disturbing events, memories and unrest that we experience and cannot get rid of. Apart from major traumatic experiences, EMDR can sometimes be applied to undesirable negative life events. These events remain in our minds in different ways or come to our minds from time to time and make us experience negative emotions. We cannot escape the impact of these events even if we wanted to. With this method, events that we experienced in our childhood or recently and that affected us negatively but could not think about and solve appropriately are addressed.

In what situations can EMDR therapy be applied?

EMDR Although it is mainly applied for intense fear and anxiety, it is a therapy that can be used in many psychiatric disorders today.

-In sudden crisis situations (family conflicts, divorce, challenging experiences at school)

-Anxiety and phobias (such as public speaking, cat/dog phobia, airplane phobia)

-Traumatic experiences (sexual harassment, rape, car accident, terrorist acts, death, loss)

- Repetitive behavioral patterns (such as difficulty in close relationships, difficulty in making decisions)

What is the purpose of EMDR therapy?

Reducing the problems and difficulties that occur in daily life, memories fade away or begin to fade away, negative emotions and challenging physical sensations decrease. At the end of the EMDR sessions, the experienced event begins to not be as disturbing as before and the meaning of the event changes. As the person's beliefs about himself become more positive, an increase in awareness and coping skills is observed.

How is EMDR therapy applied?

During EMDR therapy, two-way stimuli are given to the brain. A transition is made between the two hemispheres, thus facilitating information processing and new learning. During the therapy process, the level of fear and anxiety is kept at low levels and the patient's knowledge is increased during the process of processing new information. It is ensured that people create ideas with more controlled and positive thoughts. Intensely anxious or fearful events experienced before begin to be evaluated and given meaning in different parts of the brain.

In order for EMDR therapy to give the best results, it is very important that the therapist has adequate training and is a good clinician. EMDR therapy takes a shorter time than other therapies, but how long this therapy will last is determined by the patient's mental state, the complexity of the trauma experienced, the presence of any other accompanying psychiatric disease, and the patient's psychosocial support systems. In this therapy, although problems can sometimes be solved in one session, the recommended treatment of emotions and thoughts is in 3 sessions. Sometimes, in complex traumas, it may continue for 8-10 sessions.
