Coronavirus (Covid-19) and Psychological Effects

The coronavirus, which emerged in China and started to spread rapidly, is showing its effect more dominantly day by day. So much so that, at first, we were somewhat relieved that the city of Wuhan, which was seen as the first city to be far from us, was quarantined. But when we return to the present day, we can see that it is right next to us. The virus has been seen in most of Turkey's neighboring provinces, and the fact that it is spreading very seriously and rapidly in Iran has caused us to take some precautions.

In addition to these, the fact that the virus can quickly spread to every country recently and the fact that it is causing death in a frightening way. The possibility of this outcome and the methods and restrictions applied in cities under quarantine also affect us psychologically. Moreover; In the early days when the virus emerged, 42.6% of the Chinese population (this rate is approximately 6 times the population of Turkey) experienced stress, fear and anxiety. Later, the increase in the number of cases resulting in death and quarantine practices increased this rate, and just like the virus, these psychological problems began to spread around the world. According to a recent study conducted voluntarily in China, the anxiety and fear rate is thought to be 80% and above.

Cui Erjing, a volunteer psychologist in Shanghai, China, told Reuters; Based on his observations and research, he states that people feel very tired and talk about their fears and concerns in almost every sentence they use. Erjing; He said that most people show symptoms of chronic depression and, accordingly, have suicidal thoughts. It reveals the psychological consequences of such a serious virus. In addition; We can say that substance use has increased along with these psychological disorders in China.

The fact that the virus is rapidly spreading to all countries and that most of these countries are among the developed countries and a solution has not yet been found, and moreover, some of the favorite cities in the world taking great precautions, flight and travel cancellations day by day, and the fact that important people, members of parliament, ministers and even state leaders are carrying this virus and are being treated. The fact that it is tiring shows the fact that everyone is in danger and increases the possibility of people being vulnerable to such psychological disorders.

As a result; We can clearly see that coronavirus is not just a virus that negatively affects the human body. The fear, anxiety and subsequent depression, panic and even suicide cases that it creates reveal the seriousness of the situation.
