It may change partially. We divide gallbladder stones into three according to their size: stones smaller than 1 cm, stones between 1-2 cm and larger than 2 cm. Stones in the gallbladder may be single or usually multiple. The sizes of the many stones may also differ from each other. In other words, in addition to 1 cm stones, 2-3 mm stones can also be seen. In this case, it is necessary to decide on treatment by taking small stones into consideration.
The only treatment method for all stones is surgery. However, we need to explain some details. If gallstones block the gallbladder duct or cause inflammation, urgent surgery is required regardless of their size.
Complaints related to gallbladder stones are considered as stomach/abdominal pain, indigestion, bloating, gas in the abdomen, belching, and back pain.
If gallbladder stones are smaller than 1 cm;
a) It is necessary to rush for surgery due to the risk of these stones falling into the bile duct and causing larger diseases (bile stones, biliary tract inflammation, pancreatic gland inflammation, jaundice, liver disease). Surgery is required whether the person has a complaint or not.
b) Since the risk of 2-3 mm stones falling into the bile duct is high, surgery is appropriate without waiting.
c) If the person has diabetes, surgery is required without waiting.
If the gallbladder stone is between 1-2 cm;
a) If the patient does not have any complaints and a gallbladder stone is detected incidentally during examinations performed for another reason, surgery may not be performed. It is necessary to follow the person for his/her complaints and the problems that the stone may cause.
b) If you have diabetes, gallbladder surgery is required even if you have no complaints. If the gallstone is larger than 2 cm;
a) Surgery is required whether there is a complaint or not.
b) In diabetic patients, surgery should be performed without delay.
