Penile prosthesis placement surgeries can be performed when erectile dysfunction cannot be resolved with drug treatments or in cases where it has been determined that these drugs are harmful or will not be useful. Before such surgery, blood tests are performed and afterwards, penile color Doppler ultrasonography is performed to evaluate penile blood flow. This test is basically an evaluation of whether there is sufficient blood flow as a result of a medication administered to the penis. If there is not sufficient blood flow, the patient will not respond to medical treatment. The result of this test can be used diagnostically for penile prosthesis placement.
Penile prostheses are materials produced to be surgically placed into the penis as the last treatment option for men with erectile dysfunction. Medical treatments should be tried first and finally the current situation should be confirmed with penile Doppler ultrasonography.
There are basically two groups of penis prostheses;
1: Malleable (foldable) penis prosthesis --- permanent hard penis prosthesis
This surgery can be performed with general or regional anesthesia (numbing from the waist down). The surgical procedure takes approximately 45 minutes to an hour. After the surgery, if the sensation, orgasm ability and ejaculation function of the penis are normal before the surgery, these functions continue after the prosthesis is placed. The prosthesis only allows the penis to become hard, regardless of sexual stimulation. The aim of prosthesis surgery is to provide this hardness and upward angulation of the penis. Apart from this, placing a penile prosthesis does not increase penis length or diameter, but additional surgical procedures can be performed to increase penis length and diameter during the operation. Application of a penile prosthesis does not directly affect a person's sexual desire.
When the postoperative wound healing is completed, the scars at the surgery site are usually not noticed and the presence of the prosthesis is not obvious from the outside.
