The sacroiliac joint is the joint between the pelvis bones (ilium) and the sacrum, the last part of the spine. There are two symmetrical pieces and they work in harmony with each other. It is one of the main joints that transfers the load of our body from top to bottom. If the harmony between the two symmetrical sides is disrupted and one moves less than the other, the load transfer will also be impaired, thus dysfunction occurs. As a result, many seemingly unrelated problems begin. Headache, back pain, fatigue, leg pain and sometimes unexplained numbness may occur due to sacroiliac joint dysfunction. Dysfunction is generally more common in people who work in ergonomically poor positions, who always sit in the same way, or who are anatomically predisposed.
The piriformis muscle is a muscle that extends between the sacrum (lower part of the spine) and the hip bone (femur) and is located on the inside of the thigh. allows it to rotate. The sciatic nerve passes through this eyebrow. In cases where this muscle contracts excessively and goes into spasm, complaints similar to a herniated disc may occur due to compression of the sciatic nerve within it. Pain in the hip area and numbness in the leg are the most common symptoms. Piriformis Syndrome is generally seen in people who spend most of their time sitting, do not do sports, and have a high stress load.
It is important for the physician to first consider Sacroiliac Dysfunction and the related Piriformis Syndrome, and it is diagnosed by physical examination. X-ray, MRI and EMG are mostly performed to exclude other possibilities.
In its treatment, it is primarily necessary to regulate and change general posture habits and carry out exercise programs. In the next stage, physical therapy methods, injections, psychological help, dry needle acupuncture and drug treatments can be used. It is very important to be disciplined and stick to treatment in these diseases, which can sometimes even be confused with rheumatism. It may cause pain that lasts for years and may require unnecessary treatments.
