With the opening of schools, the process of separation of families with their children who will start primary school or kindergarten begins. It is normal for the child to be worried about being separated from the mother and entering a social environment alone for the first time. School is an uncertainty that the child has never experienced before. The child needs to understand this anxiety arising from uncertainty. The process of adjusting to school is different for each child. While some children will separate from their mother quickly, some will have a little difficulty. The first 4 weeks are the adaptation period when getting used to school. If, after this process, the child still has difficulty separating, cries, clings to the mother and cannot leave, this should be evaluated by a specialist. The problem should not be postponed. The most common solution we come across is to send a child who cannot get used to a kindergarten to another kindergarten. This is a wrong search for a solution. Because school rejection is separation anxiety. Separation anxiety disorder is the child's extreme anxiety that is unexpected for his/her developmental period when he or she is expected to leave home or loved ones. The child violently refuses to go to school. Especially in the morning hours, physical complaints such as abdominal pain and nausea may be present. Excessive worrying about something bad happening to the person to whom one is attached is constantly observed. In order for it to be called separation anxiety disorder, such symptoms must last at least 4 weeks and impair the child's functionality.
How should families treat children who have difficult separations? Saying words like "going to school" does not reduce the child's anxiety. On the contrary, the child thinks that his feelings are not understood. Instead, the mother's words of "I know you are a little scared because I won't be there with you, every child who starts school gets a little worried, but this anxiety will decrease as they continue school" comforts the child. At first, it is important for parents to pay attention to the hours of dropping off and picking up the child from school, so that the child can get used to school life. When the child sees that his mother is waiting for him after school, his anxiety decreases. It is also important for the family and the school to cooperate in getting used to school life. The family has one-to-one communication with the teacher It will also benefit. It is very important for the family to be supportive and determined in sending the child to school, and for the child to see this. I wish all students to have an enjoyable academic year. Best regards.
