Stress is a Component of Our Lives

In our age where technology, urbanization and crowded population are rapidly increasing, tension in society and individuals is becoming inevitable. The comfort created by the modern age also brings with it stress and loneliness. Stress, which we can describe as today's disease, affects our lives more than we ever imagined. Factors such as epidemics, economic shocks, exposure to mobbing, isolation from society, individualization reaching the level of loneliness, and tiring work tempo, especially in our country and all over the world, force us to constantly live side by side with the negative conditions of stress. Stress, which continues to exist with us in every part of our individual, family, social and business lives, can affect individuals positively or negatively depending on the shape of events and situations.

Cücelloğlu defined stress as the effort an individual spends beyond his psychological and physiological limits due to incompatible conditions in the physical and social environment. Canon defined stress as the physiological responses necessary to regain the physiological internal balance that is disrupted after negative environmental effects. Changes in our existing life balance cause us to experience feelings of uncertainty, tension, sadness and anxiety, and as a result, stress to dominate us. While individuals who manage stress correctly come to a better and more advanced point, unfortunately, it can increase more in individuals who have difficulty in coping, causing it to spread to different points or cause the threshold of influence to reach a lower point. The pressure of many events and conditions such as our efforts to keep up with today's conditions, the effort we spend trying to achieve our goals in business or education life, living in an environment we cannot adopt, innovations or tensions within the family, negative social events, the pandemic process, etc. continue to feed stress. While stress given in the right dose provides success and resilience, excessive and continuous stress imprisons the individual in a circle that compresses him/her psychologically, physiologically and socially. As a result, with its social impact such as violence, anger outbursts, suicide or murder incidents that we frequently encounter in the media agenda; mental health problems, sexual intercourse Unfortunately, physiological problems such as heartburn, stomach aches, heart spasms and headaches become inevitable.

There is an advice we mostly hear from doctors; stay away from stress! So, how realistic can it be to stay away from the stress that exists at every moment of our lives? Even looking for ways to escape from stress creates stress in the individual, and staying away from it would be a very utopian statement. So, how can we cope with stress? First of all, have at least one hour for yourself in a twenty-four hour day. Try to do the activities you enjoy during this time and focus on yourself. Try to control your nutrition and organize your meals. Set your sleeping hours in a certain order and give yourself some rest during the day. Do sports at home or with the support of a center, this can be a small walk. Try to face the problems you are experiencing rather than running away from them. Know yourself and take on as much responsibility as you can. When making important decisions, consider them in detail and examine yourself. When you experience a stressful event, try to stay calm, so focus on your body movements, try to control them, and regulate your breathing. Focus on the realistic aspects of the incident rather than focusing on the worst part. Try to come up with solutions by considering different angles. Act by considering the worst possible scenario in line with your decision. It will be effective in controlling stress during stress. Instead of avoiding stress, looking for ways to manage and cope with stress correctly and applying these to our lives will bring us more returns.
