Will Using Vacuum During Birth Harm Me or My Baby?

Birth may not always go as planned. Sometimes labor slows or stops. Problems may occur regarding the baby's or your
health. If your doctor thinks that continuing labor may harm you or your baby, he may decide to give birth using other methods, such as using vacuum or emergency cesarean section.

Once labor begins, it continues. No one can give exact information
about how the birth will end. Sometimes labor progresses quickly and the baby is born easily. Sometimes, the mother may need to push for hours
. However, there may be no change. In some births, the doctor may use vacuum to speed up or assist birth. This is called operative vaginal birth
. This accounts for 4% of all births. I would like to list the other reasons for operative vaginal birth as follows:

A problem with the baby (heartbeat disturbance, etc.)
In case there is no progress
Any medical need If you cannot strain sufficiently for any reason
Pregnant women who have had an epidural cannot strain
Vacuum is a device with a head and a handle that applies negative pressure. The head part is advanced into the vagina and placed on the baby's head. The physician controls the movement of the baby's head using the handle. Meanwhile, the woman continues to strain.

In many cases, the use of vacuum does not cause any problems. I would like to give brief information about the problems that may occur as a result of vacuum use. When a vacuum is delivered, there is a 20% chance that there may be bruising, called hematoma, on the baby's scalp in the area where the vacuum is placed. Sometimes the baby's eyes may become red. Neonatal jaundice is more common in babies born with vacuum. None of these problems
will cause any permanent harm to the baby. The baby's brain tissue is not damaged.

In women, there may be injuries to the vagina, perineum or anus during vacuum delivery. If injury occurs
pelvic organ prolapse, urinary or fecal incontinence, or gas leakage may occur after birth.
Some people may need surgery to correct these problems. However, you should know that
this is also the case with any vaginal birth. problems may occur.

Be sure to discuss these risks with your doctor before using vacuum during birth.

After birth, you should tell the pediatrician that your baby was delivered with vacuum, so that he/she can monitor your baby for some
symptoms.
