Reflections of Social Media and Internet Use on Our Psychology

With the introduction of the Internet into our lives, great changes have occurred in ourselves and our values. In our lives where every moment is precious, we use the internet and social media unconsciously.

Research has shown that users in Turkey spend an average of 3 hours a day on social media. Whether we are aware of it or not, the harm that social media does to us is quite a lot.

So what are the harms that social media does to us?

1) We have become addicted to likes and comments!

The more likes and comments we receive from the photos we share on social media, the happier we become.

We value ourselves and others through the likes and comments received. We started to evaluate. For this purpose, interesting, flawless-looking photographs with fascinating views are shared.

The person who gets a lot of likes and has many followers is seen as a popular person. This also includes brand pages selling on Instagram, doctors promoting their work, estheticians, etc. The fact that they are valid, have a high number of followers, brings to mind the idea that they are reliable and competent. People who receive few likes may think that they are unloved and worthless.

2) We have become intolerant!

Let's imagine that the internet is cut off for a day or two, this is a disaster for many people. it would be. Not having the internet for even 5 minutes can drive people crazy. We couldn't tolerate even a slow page loading. With the introduction of the internet into our lives, we have been able to access almost everything easily, and with very little effort. It is now very easy to reach information or a person. All of these have turned us into intolerant people who cannot wait.

3) Family and friend relationships have been damaged!

With the use of phones and the internet, we started to spend less time with our loved ones. Rather than sitting and chatting with our family and friends, we prefer to spend time on social media with the phones in our hands and get stuck there for hours.

4) Everyone is trying to look happy!

I attract my attention. Another point that attracts attention is that everyone tries to appear happy on social media. study. It's like we've made it our mission to look happy on social media.

Whoever you look at, they have no problems or sadness, everything seems perfect! People look at these lives and envy them. (Of course) Perfect lives, perfect people... I would like to make a note here, "Remember that nothing is as it seems."

5) The academic success of our young people is under threat!

Research shows that internet usage among young people has reached 90%. Young people are very involved with the internet. They can't even start studying for classes. Messages and notifications coming one after the other... It takes a long time for our young people to pay attention. Alarm bells have already begun to ring for a young person who spends his time on classes on social media or online games. At this point, the parent's responsibility falls. Parents should regulate the child's or young person's internet usage hours. If they have done their best but cannot overcome it, they should seek help from an expert.

6) We are moving away from ourselves!

People who want to look more perfect in selfies are looking for a solution in plastic surgery. This is one of the reasons why there has been an explosion in nose aesthetics in recent years. People don't like what they have, they always desire what is better. On the other hand, becoming beautiful is used as a way of escape. People are running away from themselves! A person tries to forget the things he can't solve inside by becoming beautiful, with the hope that everything will be okay...

And a few recommendations:

- We cannot completely remove the internet from our lives, but we can determine how much we will use it. , we can determine the time we spend on social media so that we can spend more time for ourselves.

- We don't realize it, but unfortunately, we are getting further away from ourselves every day. We have come to use social media even to relieve our stress. Let's journey into our own inner world, let's not forget ourselves. Let's not ignore our existing problems, let's focus on them. Let's accept our physical characteristics and love ourselves.
