If the mother's blood type is Rh (-) and the father's blood type is Rh (+), there is a blood incompatibility. If the baby's blood type is Rh (+), if the baby's blood cells mix with the mother's blood, defense cells against Rh antigens are formed in the mother's body. The baby in this pregnancy will not be harmed, but if the baby becomes Rh (+) in the next pregnancy, the anti-Rh antibodies formed in the mother's blood during this first pregnancy pass to the baby and cause the baby's blood cells to break down and cause anemia in the baby.
What is blood incompatibility injection?
Miscarriage, curettage, ectopic pregnancy, early separation of the placenta (baby's partner), blows and traumas to the mother's womb, amniocentesis, CVS, cordocentesis Interventions such as these may cause the mother and baby's blood to mix. After this transition, anti-D globulin injection must be given within 72 hours to prevent the formation of anti-Rh antibodies. This injection prevents the formation of antibodies in the mother and prevents the next pregnancy from being affected by these antibodies. Likewise, after normal birth and cesarean section, the baby's blood type is checked and if the baby's blood group is Rh+, a blood incompatibility injection should be given within 72 hours.
In case the pregnant woman with blood incompatibility is affected after not receiving the Anti-D injection, not in the current pregnancy. There is a possibility of encountering serious problems in the next pregnancy. Anti-Rh antibodies passed from the mother cause the baby's blood cells to break down and sediment. In this case, the baby experiences severe anemia. Accordingly, a condition called hydrops fetalis is detected in the baby during ultrasound. Heart failure as a result of anemia in the baby and fluid accumulation in the body cavities are the cause of hydrops. Depending on the severity of the disease and the amount of blood cells destroyed, the baby may even die in the womb.
