What is a Scar?

Scar; It is a cosmetic problem that occurs as a result of loss of integrity on the skin (epidermis and dermis) due to various reasons such as trauma, incision, operation.

What are Scar Treatments?

Scar treatment depends on the time it takes for the scar to form. There are many different types of scar treatments, although they vary from person to person. At least 1 year must pass for a scar to take its final form. In the first 6 months of this 1 year, the scar can be made less obvious with special creams or some silicone layers. If the scar is still visible after 1 year, carbon dioxide laser, peeling (skin peeling process with weak acidic substances) or the option of surgically removing the scar again and stitching it more carefully by reducing the scar can be tried.

Does the Scar Go away?

This is one of the questions we encounter most frequently. The most important factor determining scarring is genetics. For example, while scars heal more fluffy and more clearly in dark and oily skin, individuals with dry, thin, wrinkled and pale skin have fewer scars, and this scar is often not visible when viewed from a distance.

Another factor that determines the scar. is the localization of the wound. While the scar is obvious on the back or midline of the chest, the scar in areas such as the eyelid is often not visible when viewed from a distance.

Tension in the wound is another factor that determines the scar. Scarring is less obvious in wrinkled skin, for example, in the elderly, the elasticity of the skin has decreased and therefore the skin wrinkles. It leaves less scarring in older patients. However, the scar is visible on stretched skin. For example, in children, the skin is elastic and taut. The wound heals quickly, but the scar may turn red and expand. And the scar expands with the growth of the body in children, so it is necessary to pay attention to the scars on the scalp in children.

The direction of the scar is also important. For example, parallel incisions on the face leave less scars due to the tension created by the facial muscles.

Surgical Technique has an important place. It is necessary to use subcutaneous suture materials that will reduce the tension in the scar by using suture materials that will not create stitch marks in the wound.
