Cardiology Specialist Dr. stated that cardiovascular diseases are the leading diseases that cause death. Özgür Mete said that one should be more careful in the summer months.
Cardiology Specialist Dr. warns cardiovascular patients against excessive heat. Özgür Mete said, “The number of patients who have heart attacks and die due to cardiovascular disease increases in extremely hot and humid weather. This number increases especially in the elderly and those with comorbidities. In the summer months, as the weather gets warmer, the blood vessels expand, fluid and salt loss increases, the heart beats faster, the workload of the heart increases, and the blood tends to clot. "For this reason, those in the risk group have a higher risk of having a heart attack," he said. Stating that the most effective method against heat is sweating of the body, Dr. Özgür Mete said, “As water evaporates from the moist skin, the skin begins to cool. In this way, the decrease in the amount of fluid circulating in the vessels leads to a decrease in the volume of blood passing through the kidneys. This leads to narrowing of the vessels due to substances secreted from the kidneys and adrenal glands, and sudden increase in blood pressure and increased symptoms of heart failure, if sufficient fluid is not consumed. In hot weather where sweating is excessive, patients with hypertension, heart failure, and those using diuretic medications should drink sufficient amounts of fluid. Otherwise, deterioration in kidney functions and sudden drops in blood pressure may occur. Sodium and potassium deficiency occurs in people using these medications as a result of excessive fluid loss. "This may cause heart rhythm disturbances and impairments in consciousness," he said. Explaining that they should apply to a health institution, Mete said, “In order for cardiovascular patients to have a healthier time during the hot summer months, they should not walk under the direct sun, especially during the hours when the sun is upright, and should be in cool and shaded places during these hours. Types of sports that require heavy strength should be avoided. You can swim for 30 minutes early in the morning or in the cool evening. Avoid heavy, fatty meals and eat vegetable-based foods in small and frequent intervals. should be reprimanded. Care should be taken to consume 22.5 liters of fluid, which is the daily fluid requirement. You should enter the sea and the pool on an empty stomach in the morning and evening. "One should not swim in the sea immediately after a meal," he said.
