Sleep Regulation in Children During the School Period

With the start of the school year, one of the most difficult issues for families is the sleep problems and sleep battles they experience with their children. Research shows that students who have routine sleeping hours are more successful than students who sleep irregularly. An important issue should not be sleeping too little or too much, but adequate and quality sleep. When a student does not get enough sleep, he/she may experience inability to focus, lack of attention, and adaptation problems with peers and teachers at school.

How to understand a sleep problem in a child, what are the symptoms?

Recently, children's sleep times have been negatively affected. The most influential materials are the use of tablets and phones. Mobile phones and computers cause our sleep rhythm to be disrupted due to bright white light. The child often cannot be aware of the time spent in the virtual environment. The family that complains about this issue may enter into conflict with the child and, apart from resolving the situation, the relationship may be damaged. Students, whose use of technological devices is almost unlimited during the summer period, may falter with the opening of schools and may tend to have this time again.

The family should draw the boundaries correctly and not make the decision alone, it is important that the child is convinced about this decision. If the child is not convinced and you put this in front of the child as a rule, serious conflicts may arise at home regarding the implementation of this rule. In this regard, the decision should be made by taking the child's needs into consideration.

The child who feels safe is always the child who is more compatible in terms of cooperation. If your child is having sleep problems, the right step would be to make him feel safe rather than forcing him to take him to bed. The sleep preparation process can be beneficial for children who have sleep problems. Getting ready to put on the kids' pajamas and brush their teeth At the same time, it can be perceived as a part of preparing for sleep. Sleep is one of the primary conditions of being a healthy individual. Since childhood is one of the most critical periods of development, 'getting enough sleep' should be emphasized carefully.

The American Sleep Academy has grouped the sleep duration of children regarding sleep problems as follows:

6- It is recommended that children between the ages of 13 and 13 get 9 to 11 hours of sleep. During adolescence (14-17 years old), a sleep duration between 8 and 10 hours is considered sufficient.

We wish you a healthy sleep.
