On the Way to Becoming an Inertia Warrior…

Inertia is the failure to take action for a situation we want to achieve; It is a state of inertia. It is one of the biggest obstacles to success. We know that no matter how big or magnificent what we dream of is, it cannot become reality if it is not combined with action. Action is an indispensable condition for dreams to come true.

A person who smokes shows inertia by not taking the first step to quit because he is not aware of the harm it does to his body and psychology. If someone who is overweight is aware of this but does not take action to lose weight, he is in inertia. A student with low academic success is aware that he needs to start studying to be successful, but he cannot take action; This student is in inertia.

As seen in the examples, there are two different forms of inertia;

In the first one, the person is not in a position to take steps because he is not aware of his own deficiency and what he needs to do for it.

In the second case, the person is aware that he needs to change and what he needs to do for this, but he cannot take action.

Inertia is a serious obstacle that prevents a person from living his potential and must be overcome.

Defeating it means taking the first step towards the situation we want to achieve and being able to continue it. Because sometimes we manage to take the first step, but the deterrents in our way prevent us from continuing until the end. If we can continue our actions to the point we want to reach, we can say that we have prevailed against inertia at that point.

We see many things we need to do in daily life, but we only leave them at the thought stage. It is as if a hand is pulling us from behind, preventing us from taking steps towards the situation. So, what is this hand that prevents us from moving forward and living a happier, more fulfilling life that fulfills our potential? Whose hand is it? This person is none other than ourselves! Because it is actually our habits that hinder us. There are connections (neuron networks) in our brain created by our learning. As we repeat a behavior, the signal of that connection becomes stronger and pushes us to behave in the same way in similar situations. This signal is like an electrical current between two ends. We can think. A student who does not have the habit of studying has developed a trend of inertia, and this trend gets stronger every time he shows inertia. When it starts to reverse the event, that is, when it starts to overcome inertia, this time the brain creates a new electrical current, and in the same way, with each study, the current begins to strengthen and the other unused inertial current begins to weaken. Eventually, the unused network goes out.

A Few Tips to Overcome Inertia

Of course, there are tricks that our minds play on us from time to time. . However, the most important antidote to this is awareness. Everything starts with thought. Thoughts determine how we feel (our emotions). Our feelings are also effective in deciding how we act; is the driving force. Therefore, in order to overcome inertia, we must first organize our minds according to the point we want to reach. This means;

• "Where do we want to reach?"

Answering this question is actually the most important issue of our lives, because no wind can help a ship that does not know its destination port. The clearer our goal is, the higher our chance of success.

• It is necessary to tie the goal to time, "How soon can I reach the desired goal?" With a realistic approach, an answer to this question is sought and a time period is determined.

• “What are the advantages it will provide me when I reach my goal? How will I be feeling? How will the people around me treat me? We answer your questions. Here we allow our imagination to motivate us by predicting the pleasure we will get when we reach our goal. It is the power of imagination that we must immediately activate in the deterrents we encounter on the road. We can make dream maps that will strengthen our imagination. We can create visuals about our dreams on a board or cardboard - pictures and text that we cut from sources such as magazines, newspapers and the internet - and put them together.

• We can determine a scent for our goal; It becomes the symbolic scent of our goal. Or we can assign a piece of music to achieve it; It accompanies us along the way. All of these become supportive rituals that will remind us of our goal when our motivation decreases. The richer our imagination, the greater the chance of success. Our anger increases. Having stimulants that appeal to our 5 senses will make our job easier.

• We will need a road map as we move towards the goal. This is the planning phase of the steps we need to take. We ask ourselves, “What steps will get me to my goal? What do I need to achieve my goal?” We ask questions.

• During the implementation of the steps, action is taken according to need. However, deterrents can and do still come our way.

• Sustainability; It is the state of continuing on the path without deviating from the goal. As we progress through the process, our willingness is not always at the same level. We experience ups and downs. In these declines, imaginations focused on our goal (item 3) will be our greatest savior.

I think we can provide a clearer explanation if we explain these steps through an example case;

Let's take Zeynep, who complains about her excess weight. He is aware of the weight he needs to lose, but he cannot take the first step. Even if he does, he abandons the program halfway through without achieving the result he wants. What should Zeynep do in this situation?

– How much does she want to weigh? At what weight will he feel comfortable and healthy both physically and psychologically? He decides this.

– How long will it take to reach this weight? It determines a realistic and feasible time.

– What will her body look like when she reaches her desired weight? How will he feel? What will be the reaction of those around him? What kind of clothes will he wear? What will be the developments regarding his health? He imagines all this. He adds to his dream map pictures of fit women he finds in magazines and on the internet, pictures of the clothes he plans to buy, or pictures of himself taken in previous years when he was in good shape. She always carries the music she has chosen for her goal with her and keeps her motivation alive by feeling the scent she has chosen throughout the day.

– Zeynep determines her needs and the steps she needs to take to reach her goal. For example, he does research on staying in shape, decides to work with a dietician, creates a diet program suitable for him, does shopping, determines a sports-exercise program that will support him in this process, makes the necessary arrangements at home, etc...

– He has determined it in his road map. come to the place where the steps are He begins to implement it as he goes on.

– During the process, he will encounter situations that will challenge his will. Refreshments given during guest visits, energy decreases during the day, etc. At this point, Zeynep re-enters the state of feeling like she has achieved her goal by resorting to the supportive power of her imagination. (item 3)

Giving Real Answers to the Right Questions About Yourself

These items can of course be valid if we are aware of the shortcomings in ourselves. If we are experiencing the first occurrence of inertia, that is, if we are in a situation where we cannot recognize the deficiency in ourselves, we are experiencing a problem with our self-awareness, and what we need to do to overcome inertia may be possible by answering some questions about ourselves honestly.

• Who am I? What roles do I have in life and how do these roles affect me?

• What do I like? What bothers me?

• In what environments would I be happy? Which ones do I have trouble with?

• What are my values and their place in my life?

• Am I aware of my strengths and weaknesses? What are the effects of these on my life?

• Do I know my talents and interests? To what extent do I do these justice?

• How is my emotional state? What emotions do I experience in which situations? What happens to my behavior and its consequences as a result?

Focusing on and thinking about the answers to these questions, doing research and observation is perhaps a good starting step. We can briefly list what can be done as follows:

• We should invest in personal development, thus incorporating thought systems that will make us stronger.

• Meditation supports us in calming and clarifying the mind. With a clearer perspective, it prevents physiological and psychological energy losses; increases insight. Meditating consistently will support us mentally.

• We should do exercises that will develop the right and left brain, thus pushing the limits of personal potential.

• We should make observations of other people and use them to improve our own awareness. We should use it as a mirror. For this, you must be in social environments and meet with others frequently. We need to get in touch with them and make determinations about their ways of thinking and behaving.

All these introspections ensure that the transformation we experience is from the inside out, which is a preferred situation.

And undoubtedly, all application processes require effort and patience. However, seeing these as the prices we pay on the way to gaining ourselves, which makes this process valuable, will be the right perspective to continue without falling into inertia.
