What is IVF and to whom is it applied?

To briefly summarize the in vitro fertilization application, we can call it the process of fertilization of male and female reproductive cells under extracorporeal conditions.

In this method, male and female reproductive cells are kept in a suitable environment at body temperature for 48 hours. Fertilization occurs in approximately half of the eggs obtained during this period. These fertilized eggs are called embryos (fetus) and are placed in the final target, the female uterus.

Embryos are placed into the uterus through the cervix with a thin catheter. As a result of these procedures, pregnancy occurs in approximately 50% of women. However, some of these pregnancies end in miscarriage. Approximately 40% of couples who enter treatment have children per treatment. This rate can increase to 70 - 80% as a result of many applications. The remaining 20 - 30% cannot have children today, despite all the possibilities of modern medicine.

In in vitro fertilization methods, the woman's ovaries are stimulated with various drugs (Gonal-F, Puregon, Menogon). The purpose of stimulating the ovaries is to obtain a large number of eggs that are candidates for forming an embryo. Placing a large number of embryos into the uterus (embryo transfer) has been shown to increase the chance of pregnancy (pregnancy rates are around 10% when one embryo is placed, and around 40-50% when three embryos are placed).

In vitro fertilization is a form of treatment applied to women who cannot become pregnant using classical methods. It is based on the principle of transferring the embryos formed as a result of combining male (sperm) and female (egg) sperm cells under laboratory conditions, to the uterus. Fertilization carried out under laboratory conditions is achieved either spontaneously (in vitro fertilization) or by human intervention, by injecting a single sperm into a single egg (microinjection).

In vitro fertilization is not applied to women whose tubes have previously been permanently damaged as a result of infection or surgical procedure. It was started to be used in the treatment of other causes of infertility after a short time. Today, successful results are obtained with in vitro fertilization methods in cases of endometriosis, unexplained infertility cases and male-related infertility. It is described as a revolution in the treatment of men who have sperm in their testicles, although there is no sperm in their semen.
