Ankle Sprains

Ankle sprains; It occurs as a result of strain or partial tearing of one or more of the ligaments that hold the ankle joints together.

As a result of ankle sprains, there may be strain, tears or even ruptures in one or more of the ligaments that hold the ankle joints together. Most ankle sprains occur when the ankle turns inward, which affects the ligaments on the outside of the ankle. Ankle sprains are something that happens to almost everyone, and the majority of patients recover without any significant problems.

How is it diagnosed:

Ankle sprains occur during the sprain. A crackling sound, a tearing sensation is felt, and there is pain when walking on it. There will be a slight swelling on the outside of the ankle and bruising will occur in that area within 24 hours.

How to treat:

During the treatment, the swelling in the ankle should be monitored until the joint heals. must be protected. The first thing to do in the treatment is to apply ice. Ice placed in a nylon bag is applied to the injured area with a thin towel for 10-20 minutes, 3-4 times a day. The joint should be given complete rest in the first 1-2 days. For this purpose, a cane can be taken to the patient side. Additionally, this area should be tightly bandaged with a bandage or around the ankle. Air splints can also be used for this. The sprained ankle should be elevated. (Ice, rest, bandage, elevation, BABY)

The next stage in the treatment is to protect the ankle from subsequent sprains by preventing excessive movements. Bandages, splints, or braces can be used for this.

Physical therapy may be required for complete healing of some long-lasting lesions, and even surgical intervention may be required for tendon ruptures. If the person who has an ankle injury is an athlete, a good rehabilitation program should be implemented. If swelling and pain continue despite all these measures and the complaints do not decrease in 8-10 days, the situation may be serious. In this case, further evaluation should be made with MRI or US
