Chest wall cancers refer to tumors originating from ribs and fibreboard bones, cartilages and muscle, connective tissues that make up the rib cage. Among these, tumors formed in the bones and cartilages are frequently seen, while the ribs are the most frequently involved site.
What are Chest Wall Tumors?
Primary chest wall tumors are divided into two as benign and malignant. Benign tumors may originate from soft tissue, bone or cartilage.
Malignant tumors grow rapidly, present with painful and palpable swellings. Most of those originating from bone tissue originate from the ribs. In soft tissue sarcomas, there is usually no pain and a better process is followed compared to other malignant tumors.
How is the treatment of chest wall tumors?
The diameter of the tumor in chest tomography examination performed in chest wall tumors, The signs of spread such as invasion of the bones and surrounding soft tissue involvement are checked.
The treatment of some of the chest wall tumors is non-surgical and the patients are treated with radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy.
In the presence of a surgically treated chest wall tumor, the aim is to remove the tumor with wide margins. and supporting the chest wall with artificial platinum and patches if necessary.
