Urine Foam - Foamy Urine

What is Urine Foam?

Excessive foaming and bubbles in the urine while urinating, especially in men and women, is a condition that is mostly seen in normal healthy people (70%), and may also be a sign of some serious diseases. Urine is normally light yellow in color and has a unique odor. In healthy people, foaming and bubble formation during urination is mostly related to the urine hitting the urinal hard, some medications used, foods taken and the amount of water consumed. Additionally, detergent and soap residues in the urinal may cause the same situation. If patients (approximately 30%) complain of urinary foaming, also have frequent urge to urinate, change in urine color and odor, and some systemic complaints other than urine, it may be a sign of some serious diseases. If the complaint of foaming in the urine has been present for a long time and is accompanied by symptoms such as edema (swelling in the hands and feet), weakness-fatigue, loss of appetite, weight loss, nausea-vomiting, change in urine color, increased frequency of urination, consult a urologist or a health institution without delay. It is useful to apply. A simple urine test can give many clues. Seeing blood in the urine may be the first sign of many urological cancers (kidney, bladder and prostate cancer, etc.).

Causes of urine foaming due to diseases:

1-Drinking less water (Thirst) :Removing the solute load and metabolic wastes that the kidneys must excrete daily with a smaller amount of urine results in a more concentrated urine output. Due to this dense content, it causes foaming and bubbles to form while urinating. This appearance can disappear by quenching thirst and increasing the amount of fluid taken.

2-Kidney disease and kidney failure: While the kidney is filtering, it removes some wastes such as urea-creatinine and some proteins that should not be excreted. It keeps substances in the body. It is vitally important that some important substances, such as protein, remain in the body. However, if there is renal failure or disease in both kidneys, the body cannot retain vital substances such as protein and is excreted with urine. This is called proteinuria or, depending on its extent, nephrotic syndrome and is characterized by higher than normal urine content. The protein found in urine causes foaming bubbles to form in the urine because it reduces surface tension. This may be the first sign of kidney failure. In renal failure, in addition to proteinuria, bad taste in the mouth, nausea and vomiting, shortness of breath, edema, weakness and fatigue, increased urinary frequency, and itching may be observed.

3-Diabetes: Normally There is no sugar in the urine content, but if the blood sugar (glucose) in diabetic patients (diabetes) is above 180 mg/dl, sugar begins to appear in the urine and depending on the concentration of sugar in the urine, it may cause urine foaming and bubbles to form during urination. This condition may be an early symptom of diabetes. In addition, dry mouth, drinking too much water, frequent urination, weight loss, weakness and fatigue may be observed in diabetic patients.

4- Urinary Tract Infection:If foamy urine is accompanied by burning and pain while urinating, you may have a urinary tract infection (inflammation). Solution can be provided with plenty of water and appropriate antibiotics.

5- Retrograde Ejaculation: When the semen escapes into the bladder rather than out, it is called retrograde ejaculation. This condition causes urine mixed with semen, which can cause foaming and many bubbles to form when urinating. Retrograde ejaculation can be caused by spinal injuries, prostate surgeries, diabetes and some medications.

6-Pregnancy:Foaming and bubbles when urinating due to the hormone content and concentration of other substances in the urine of pregnant women. formation may be observed, but if there are other accompanying findings, it is necessary to investigate.

7-Stress: In cases where stress dominates the human body, intense stress hormone wastes in the urine cause foaming and bubbles during urination.

8-Other Causes: Foaming in the urine in cases such as hepatitis, AIDS, some drugs (rheumatism drugs), some rheumatic diseases, blood cancer (multiple myeloma, leukemia, etc.). and bubble formation can be seen.
