Epilepsy Seizures

• In its simplified form, epileptic seizures are due to short-term brain dysfunction, and occur as a result of temporary abnormal electrical propagation in brain cells.

• There are many different types of epileptic seizures. More than forty seizure types have been described. In addition to the well-known tonic-clonic seizure, which is understood by everyone when talking about epilepsy or epilepsy, there are also types of seizures that are so mild that others may not notice them at all. Despite these defined seizure types, everyone's seizures may show some unique differences.

• These conditions make it difficult to diagnose epilepsy in some patients and cause a wide variety of confusion. Unfortunately, many patients remain undiagnosed and it may take years for it to become clear what is wrong with them. In some people, symptoms caused by another disorder may be misdiagnosed as epilepsy. Thanks to developing diagnostic methods, misdiagnoses are gradually decreasing.

• New classifications and the introduction of different seizure names have caused the issue to become more complicated. For this reason, the same seizure may be called different names. In this section, we have tried to give as much information as possible without going into very technical details.

• Basically, what should be kept in mind is that there are two types of seizures: partial (that is, seizures that start limited to a region in the brain) and generalized (those that start widely in the brain). Widespread onset does not mean a worse or more severe seizure. The grouping here is related only to the difference in the cause of the seizure and these names are given for medical reasons.

• What is experienced during the seizure (seizure symptoms) depends on where the change in brain activity begins and how quickly it spreads. Partial seizures, as the name suggests, start in a part of the brain. The electrical discharge either remains in that area or spreads to other parts of the brain. Generalized seizures (there are types such as tonic-clonic, absence, and myoclonic) spread throughout the brain.

• It is of great importance to know what type of seizure it is. Because this is probably a guide as to which epilepsy drug will be more effective. HE Therefore, when someone has a seizure, it is very useful to take notes about the seizure and even take a video.
