What is Infertility?

We can roughly define infertility as a reproductive system disorder that can be seen in men or women and in which pregnancy does not occur despite unprotected sexual intercourse for 1 year or longer. Looking at the researches, we can say that many couples see infertility as the biggest crisis of their lives. Especially from a social point of view, although it is not as strict as before, individuals who learn that they are experiencing infertility may have difficulties in many ways, since marriage is still seen as a joint and indispensable issue. Considering that the concept of infertility is settled in our language with the word infertility, which means inefficiency in Turkish, it will not be difficult to estimate how big a role social stereotypes play in the background.

Infertility Psychology

Studies on infertility show that infertile individuals experience many problems such as stress, depression, loneliness, social isolation, stigma, low self-esteem, and marital problems. But another important point is that women are exposed to these problems more than men. In our society, the fact that the responsibility of fertility is mostly women's has a great impact on this. So what do women with infertility experience beyond these psychological diagnoses? They blame themselves, see the situation as a failure, feel incomplete or incomplete, and may experience feelings of worthlessness or inadequacy. They may isolate themselves from society or feel excluded. Considering motherhood as sacred and perceiving it as a status in the society constitute an important basis for these problems experienced by women who cannot become mothers.

Why is Psychological Support Important in Infertility?

I would like to talk about two factors here: First, According to many studies, stress and severe depressive mood at the beginning of treatment can reduce the chance of conception. In other words, the psychological difficulties experienced by the person as a result of infertility may indirectly affect the treatment process and outcome negatively. For this reason, it is very important to cope with the psychological problems experienced.

Secondly, according to the results of the research, women's educational status, economic status, The existence of factors such as the meaning they attribute to infertility and finding other meanings in their lives other than motherhood increase the quality of life of infertile women.
